Once all of the options have been used up on a player, a player is considered "out of options" and a player must be placed on and clear waivers prior to being sent down to the minor leagues (there is also the "veterans' consent" rule; see below). Additionally, three years after the date of a player’s first appearance on a major-league roster, he must clear optional waivers (which are revocable) to be optioned even if he has options remaining

    Re: Chapman (POLL)

Cap is a no-brainer-- the ultimate leader plus he has the Super Soldier Serum. He's a lock. A true ace with few questions. (Though, to be fair, I could see where overuse of his body breaks him down. I mean, just how many years does he have? And he's going full-tilt boogie all the time. Regressing to the mean should be expected-- and soon, IMO.) Still, the leadership is there, no matter what sabrecomtricians might say. He's in.

Same for Iron Man. I realize he's a human in a world that may need more power, but that suit is a difference-maker. He's got some serious power in that thing. And none of this mentions his best strength-- his brain. However, I do question his off-the-field antics-- alcoholism and hundreds of women parading through his apartments and houses plus the daily microscope of the media-- at least Cincinnati isn't a large city. Perhaps the media won't be as intense here?

Thor's a powerhouse, but he's got split allegiances. Can you really trust him? Is his recent (i.e., last 20-40 years) past enough to offset all those centuries of focusing only on his home world? No question he's got the goods-- monster power, great track record. But he is a bit long in the tooth. What is he, 1,700 years old? Maybe more. He's a veteran and he battles. Therefore, I think you have to keep him.

This is where things get tricky. You have to go with the Black Widow, I think, simply because she's been there before. And she's a girl. You have to switch things up in a good rotation. She's a great strategist, an underrated fighter, and a deadeye shooter. Great control. She also had a great year last season. Fought the Hulk and came away relatively unscathed, then took on Loki and the Ultimate Skrulls.

So now you're down to the last spot. Hawkeye's got a phenomenal history, Matt Fraction, and unerring accuracy with a bow and arrow. But he's a hothead, and he can't really fight all that well. He's also not a real team player, and you've got to have a fifth starter willing to acquiesce to the team. What if Baker wants him to spot start-- is Clint going to go all primadonna and demand his own team? Is he going to demand a trade to the West Coast? Too, he's got a messy divorce in his past. Might not be a great fit.

OTOH, Chapman's got a 100 mph fastball. He's also got a devastating slider and his control last season was outstanding. He's also Cuban, which could really improve international questions, as Cap and Stark are both American, Natasha is a Russian emigree, and Thor's from another world. Might need another former Socialist on the team.

Personally, I'd go with Chapman. More upside.

I voted bullpen, but more specifically, dominant closer! With the latest that's out there, he wants to close, Baker wants him to close and it sounds like everyone would be more comfortable with him as closer.

I'm reading a lot about how Leake is really looking good.

    Let's make it a 6 inning game and chalk up a W.

    Re: Chapman (POLL)

Starter > Trade Bait > Closer

While it was fun watching what Chapman did last season, if he isn't going to start I think the Reds would be better served by shopping Chapman around and seeing if he couldn't fetch something more valuable via trade. I've never been in love with the idea of investing heavily in a closer and with Broxton and Marshall already signed for the next few years and guys like Hoover waiting in the wings I don't see the need to devote more resources to the pen.

If Chapman can't start and can be used to bring in talent that figures to make a bigger overall impact on the club I'd make the deal.

    That you Loki?

I voted Avenger since Hulk's tenure is pretty shaky and they'll need a replacement.

Voted rotation. It made the most baseball sense to me but I also suspected thats what Chapman wanted. If I voted after hearing news of Chapman wanting to be closer, I would vote closer. That tells me he truly believes he can not be a dominant starter. i don't buy the adrenaline rush angle he put forward.

I do not see anyone wanting to be a closer over starter unless they thought they would fail miserably at being a starter. Who in their right mind would choose making 40 million for rest of their career to 150 million. The difference he is looking at in next contract comparing dominant closer to dominant starter.

I'm not sure I follow this as Chapman has pretty clearly stated that he'd prefer to stay in the bullpen but he's more than willing to do what the club wants. Personally, I think it's in Aroldis' best interest to start, but he definitely grew to liking the closers role.

It may or may not be that he thinks he'll be unsuccessful. Just off the top of my head, reasons a player would prefer to close.

*Closers don't have sit around and wait between appearances like starters do. *Closers don't have to think as much as starters do. They can just go throw.
*Closers tend to be a little more "Rock Star" than starters do.

I agree with all this if you take the money aspect out of it. Which I don't believe you can do. That is a huge difference in pay. I am certain Chapman is aware of this. Who would turn down chance to make over 100 million more at their job if they thought they could be successful at both? Major credit to Chapman if he is that uninterested in the money aspect.

I voted closer. He's a proven premier closer. I want him to continue to come into the 9th and shut it down. He works there, and he wants to be there. We did great last year with our current starters and closer, don't mess with success.

I'll agree that he has to know about the money and I wouldn't think he's disinterested in that. The "Rock Star" thing could come into play here. Who knows? Maybe he thinks he can make up a bit of the monetary difference by being a celebrity?

In the end, it could be a simple pride thing and he doesn't think he's cut out to start, like you said.

The Dusty tinfoil hat theories are a fantastic banter fodder though.
