I think this puts to rest...

This idea the Reds are a small market team with a limited payroll. The Reds are a team that will spend money on players they feel are worth it. Our owner would not shell out the LARGEST CONTRACT EVER to a non free agent if he thought it would mean not being able to pay other players when the time comes.

    Uh.

We are a small-market team with a limited payroll... At least until a we get a new TV deal or the fans really come out en masse. This just means Votto will be getting a larger portion of that limited payroll. It does speak to the FO's commitment to keeping a very special player.

Okay we are limited, we don't have the monies say the Yankees, Red Sox, Angles, Cubs, and such have, but we sure as hell are not a small market, we are more in line with a mid market level team with an owner willing to spend.

I dont know if I would say we are small market regardless of our payroll. In my opinion there are major markets(Yankees, Bosox, Cubs, Angels, Dodgers) and the rest. Funny thing about baseball........seems as though TV revenue plays a major part in determining who are the "have's" and the "have not's".

Well said. Fans in the stands = big payroll. How many games have the Phillies and Red Sox sold out consecutively?

The tv deals do make a big difference. The Yanks and Bosox both own there own networks(YES and NESN) which obviously brings in the money to pay 3 or 4 guys 15-20 mill. a year

The influence of TV deals is monumental: the Reds are said to make about 10 million annually, while the Angels just inked a new 20-year contract for 3 billion dollars. Billion. That's 150 million a year. To our 10.

Of course that has a lot to do with timing also. TV contracts in general are through the roof right now so anybody who has one expiring and can cash in now is going to profit big compared to those locked into old agreements. Obviously, the size of the LA market is part of it too though.

Jut because we are paying Votto 20 mil a year doesn't necessarily mean our payroll is going up. It just means that the amount of money we have for everyone else is going down.

We better keep drafting and developing talent because that's how we're going to have to fill out our roster in the future.
