He just wants a Los Rojos jersey with "ROLÈÑ" on the back.

    Strange.

Frazier slated as starting third baseman.
Hannahan signed as backup third baseman.

    Now Rolen wants to return.

I don't get it. And I'm a huge fan of Scott.

I know we aren't privy to the "inside baseball" here, but dang it Scott, this was information we could have used yesterday!

For reasons listed the club needs to extend a ST invitation to Rolen if he's looking to play. However, if it wants to put him on the 25-man roster, it's probably going to necessitate cutting the bullpen to six relievers. I'm for that, but he creates some complications.
Or trading Chris Heisey. If Rolen is wanted/needed on the 25, perhaps you have dual super-subs in Donald and Frazier to fill the gaps.

I'm guessing they'll want more than one OF on the bench. I'm sure you can jam The Donald or Hannarahanigan into an OF slot in an emergency, but two OFs (especially one who can play CF and hit RH) would seem to be a necessity.

    Really ? Ouch. I don't get it.

If Scott Rolen is on the team, I fear Dusty will play him more than his current capabilities warrant.

Alot of good/great Adam Sandler movies. But because I graduated high school in 1983, and I'm partial to 80's-retro movies, I love "The Wedding Singer".

    Awesome movie.

Just not a fan of "prescence guys."

He offers little other than emotions, which would be terrific if this were an episode of Oprah or a Lifetime movie.

As far as baseball goes, he's done and whatever is left in the tank will be on the DL half the year.

I just got done sticking up for Rolen in another thread, so allow me to do a 180 in this one.

At this point, I think it is just time to move on. Now, I was hoping Rolen would retire at the ASB this past year, but he came back and played great. Shows what I know. But I think his time with the club has now passed, and he can now ride off into the sunset (or sign with another club) and I won't be looking back and saying "what if...".

I really think that he will just bow out, but the example sometimes is very important, and he can still play--maybe not at the level he once was, but better than Valdez and Cairo and many others. Not a bad guy to have around. That said, I have no problem with it. I'll leave it up to Walt and BCast. So far, they're batting pretty well.

If Rolen's intent is to be a starter - pass. But if there is an understanding his primary role is to be a bench/utility player seeing limited action, mentoring the younger players (especially Frazier), then he can still be a productive and positive force on that bench IMO. I look at the dregs we've had manning our bench these last few years, especially in the PH'ing department, and it certainly didn't strike fear into the hearts of opposing pitchers when they walked to the plate.

For years I was not a presence guy either. Rolen changed my mind about that.

I think Rolen has enough in the tank that he would be more valuable to the team than just about anybody else in the Miguel Cairo role. The question is if Rolen would be willing to accept that role and that money.

Ludwick and Frazier get a lot of credit for proping up the team when Votto went down, but Rolen's splits for July and August show a 930 OPS. Now....he was dreck the rest of the year.

It won't kill me if he's not with the team, but simply out of respect, if he wants to go to spring training, I think they should bring him.

I'd go with 11 pitchers if it meant adding Rolen to the bench. You find a place for him, as long as he is comfortable as a backup.
