    Marquez Smith

The guy was signed to a minor league deal by the Reds back in December. A week or two later he was lost to the Rangers org. in the Rule 5 draft. Then he popped back up on the Bakersfield roster. Apparently, the Rangers thought he had some talent at one time.

I'm a little confused as to why this 28 yr old is still only in high A ball. He seems to be able to hit well. Is his defense not up to par for AA?

His initial placement was a bit of a surprise, given his track record, but for the past two weeks or so he's actually been playing for Pensacola.

Oh yeah, I remember that now. Wasn't he moved to Pensacola as a replacement for an injured Wahoos player?

He was signed after the season began because in the first three weeks of the season Dayton and Bakersfield lost a combined 4 first baseman to injury. That was why he went to Bakersfield. He kept on hitting and with Vidal being demoted it opened up first base in Pensacola since Travis Mattair is actually a third baseman who had been playing first.

So, then he was only signed as roster filler?

I had never paid attention to him until the Rangers selected him in the rule 5. I thought there might have been something there.

Pretty much. Anyone who is that old and still in the minor leagues is almost always roster filler. Teams have needs for guys like that, but they are almost never viewed as any kind of solution for a problem at the MLB level.

Then you're saying that pretty much everyone outside of Hamilton and Rodriguez in Louisville is roster filler

    Just about, yes.

If you aren't in the Majors by the time you are 25, odds are very good that you will never be more than a backup type of player in the Majors.

I would add Corcino to that list, but otherwise, they are all filler that are just hoping for that chance. Like a Kris Negron. He's strictly there in case he's needed in the big leagues like last season. He hopes he gets that chance, because the money alone for 2 weeks of work is unreal (about $20k a week).
