    Re: The Pitching Helmet?

Why can't we just let adults make their own decisions? I'm okay with safety gear as long as it's for the protection of other people, but if it's something that affects only the person wearing it, I think it's going too far to make it required. Is natural selection really that much of a bad thing?

Where would pitchers put their foreign substances if they don't have the gunk-encrusted bill of a cap?

The helmet pictured at the link in the article has several awesome 1/2-inch grooves in it that would enable the pitcher to select from a smorgasbord of substances.

Bright idea: Put the batting practice cage up, any balls that hits is one base, just like pee wee pitching machine league. Oh, and no one is ever out and we aren't keeping score.

How about simply making aluminum or whatever the material really is these days behave more like wood? Is that really too much for manufacturers to do? design a bat that won't cause the ball to leave at ridiculous speeds?

just determine what speeds the ball leaves the wood bat at different spots, barrel, end of the bat, jammed etc. and make these composite bats match it. Why is this still a problem?

I don't see a problem with protective gear if it is designed and engineered to be unobstrusive and not hinder the player.

I think the problem would be getting major league pitchers to wear it. Pitchers are a very self-conscious bunch. Even if they don't think it looks silly, if it affects their delivery or takes a few mph off their fastball, they won't touch it at all.

Actually, the NCAA and high school regulations have changed on aluminum and composit bats. Bats now have to have a BBCOR rating of 0.5 which will significantly reduce the batted ball speeds they produce. The new batted ball rating is the exact same as produced by wooden bats. Also, if I recall correctly, the "sweet spot" has been significantly reduced to about four inches.

Btw, I have not read the article posted here yet, but I believe that youth leagues should wear some kind of face/head protection.

It would probably be an issued, but 25 or 30 years ago, hockey players didn't wear helmets and what, 50 or 60 years ago batters didn't wear helmets in baseball. Those changes eventually came, so another one would probably work out, even if not very quickly.

Lets treat professional athletes like adults. If they want to wear a helmet on the pitchers mound when they pitch then by all means do it. If they don't want to wear a helmet on the mound then don't force them to do it. I remember a time when we left people alone and let them make their own decisions with their life.

Injuries are awesome. Skull fractures especially

My favorite part, is when, depending on the location and severity of the injury, you have to relearn stuff like how to walk and eat.

    Suck it up wimps.

It took a death in NASCAR to force safety changes there, it took a massive head injury to force base coaches to wear helmets.

It'll probably take someone prominent getting skulled and sidelined for something like this to take hold.

Also - baseball forces hitters to wear a flapped helmet in the unlikely but occasional event that a ball goes in a guys earhole. And he knows its coming.

The average exit velocity off a wood bat is somewhere in the mid 90s - and a pitcher could potentially (depending on his landing point) be scarily exposed to a mid 90s fastball to the head.

And no one calls hitters wusses because they now wear helmets.

We should get rid of pads in football, how cool would those injuries be?

    I'm imagining a sarcastic tone...

As far as NFL players go, many of them don't wear lower body pads any more, especially players at speed (WR, CB, S) positions. The NFL is considering making the knee and thigh pads mandatory.
