    Minor-League Updates: Thursday, 5-9-13

Louisville and Lehigh Valley are playing some early ball in Pennsylvania. It's Pedro Villarreal against ol' Tom Cochran, whom the Reds signed out of the Frontier League in 2009 and held onto through 2011. And it's 0-0 after four.

Hamilton singled and was caught stealing by Humberto Quintera.

Singles by Phipps, Negron and Chang push across a run in the fifth. Soto goes solo in the sixth to make it 2-0. Villareal out after six scoreless. Mike MacDougal gives up a blast to the first batter he faces in the seventh.

Mike Hessman is now 3-4 with two single and a double. His single drove home Felix Perez who had singled and advanced on a productive out. Louisville leads 3-1 while still batting in the visitors' half of the eighth.

    Villarreal's line: 6IP 3H 0R 0ER 3BB 3-1.

Bats are up in the top of the ninth now up 3-2. Henry Rodriguez had a pinch hit single with two outs and then Billy lined a single to center to bring his BA to .198.

Felix Perez hits an RBI single to add some insurance. His BA is up to .296. I think he is the fastest riser in terms of prospect importance in the whole Reds system.

Soto ends the Bats' ninth with a flyout to left.

By the way, Hanigan was taken out after two PAs tonight. Anyone know if this was planned? Maybe the Reds don't want him to play a full game so he can catch tomorrow night?

Yohan Pino came in during the 8th and will start the 9th for the Bats. He starts off the inning by striking out the first hitter. Humberto Quintero then lines out to Pino for the second out. Pino strikes out Michael Martinez and this one belongs to the Bats.

The Bats are now back to .500 for the year at 17-17.

Sounds right. Also, it was a day game after a night game. I would look for Hanigan to be back with the Reds on Friday.

I would imagine Perez would be up if Robinson falters. IMO, he is a better player. But Robinson has done a decent job so far. OBP is up over .400. As long as he keep getting on, Robinson is gonna stay with the big club. No arguments there.

Johnny Cueto getting ready to go for Dayton. Dragons' announcer said Cueto is having trouble with both the oblique and the lat muscles. Pitch limit is 60.

Cueto gives up a triple and a run in the first. Lugnuts 1 Dragons 0.

Dragons have come out smoking. Single, stolen base, wild pitch, walk, single and single. 2-1 Dayton. Nobody out.

Jesse Winker is now hitting an even .300 after a slow start. OBP is up over .400. He is slugging .480. 17BB/19K.

After back-to-back Ks, Hudson walks to load them up and then Rahier sends a gapper to the wall the clear them. Dragons lead 5-1.

Guillon will follow Cueto to the mound tonight. Or maybe not. Joey Housey followed Cueto.

    Cueto's line: 3IP 4H 1R 1ER 0BB 4K.

Dayton offense is rolling as they lead 8-1 in the middle of the fourth.

Tanner Rahier's third homer of the season makes it 9-2 after six full.

Ismael Guillon looking much sharper tonight. 3IP 2H 1R 1ER 2BB 7K. Guillon has struck out the side in two of the three innings he has worked.

Lansing tries to rally but it is too little, too late. Dayton hangs on for its first three-game winning streak of the season. Final score. 9-6.

Daniel Renken hits a batter, walks a batter and then allows a roundtripper. Pensacola bounced back to score a run in the top of the second on singles by Mathis, Mattair and Vidal. Wahoos trail 3-1.
Jacksonville has added a run and lead 4-1, batting in the fifth.
Theo Bowe had a two-out triple that failed to blossom. Tucker Barnhart has a singled in two trips and is now hitting .295.
Daniel Renken has an interesting line: 4.1IP 5H 4R 4ER 4BB 7K. He is still pitching in the bottom of the fifth.
Bryson Smith doubled and came home on Barnhart's second single on the night. Tucker is now hitting .304.
Jacksonville answered with a run off Chris Manno in the bottom half of the inning. Blue Fish trail 5-2.
Chris Manno and Kyle Lotzkar are getting roughed up. Six runs in three innings as the game is now out of hand. 10-2 Jacksonville heading into the ninth.
Mattair and Selsky single. A couple of walks. Pensacola pushes across a run but still falls 10-3.

Nice pitching match-up out West. Bakersfield sends its ace, Carlos Contreras (3.23) up against San Jose's Chris Marlowe (1.73).
Carlos Contreras was touched up for a pair of runs in the first, settled down and then ran into big trouble in the sixth.
    5.2IP 5H 5R 5ER 3BB 6K. Brian Pearl pitched a couple of shutout innings, striking out three.

Ryan Wright singled and doubled, Juan Silverio stroked two doubles, Juan Silva doubled. Juan Perez and Kyle Waldrop added singles.

    Bakersfield fell 6-2.

I watched Cueto on MILBTV last night. He loooked comfortable on the mound. Had good control. His breaking ball seemed to hang a little but that's to be expected since he's not pitched in a month. They didn't have a radar gun on TV so it was hard to tell about his velocity. All in all I thought he looked pretty close to being ready to comeback to the Reds. I assuming one more rehab start?

According to Doug and C.Trent, the radar gun was accurate last night with Cueto sitting right in the same FB range he normally sits, 92-ish.

Hanigan is also close to coming back. Not seeing Corky Miller again until he is a coach somewhere in the system is fine by me.
