    Birthdays: 7/6

    Couldn't find any Reds today...

    Others:

Greg Norton (40) -1B-3B who had the misfortune to come up with the White Sox when they had Frank Thomas at 1B and Robin Ventura at 3b...When Greg was 16, his father murdered his mother by strangling her with a necktie. Greg discovered the body...

Lance Johnson (49) -A graduate of Cincinnati's Princeton H.S., Lance led the league in triples five times. He is also the only player to lead both the NL and the AL in hits for a season, which is kind of surprising...

Willie Randolph (58) -Currently ranks fifth all-time in games played at 2b,and 3rd in double plays...I remember at one time he was thought to be a strong contender for the Reds managing job; accounts vary as to how close he actually got to it

Jason Thompson (58) -Power-hitting 1B for the Tigers and Pirates...There's an NBA player with that name too, but no NFL player that I know of. I wonder if there's a name that's common to all three major sports? Was there a Bill Russell in football?

Steve O'Neill -Played 17 seasons as a catcher, mostly for Cleveland...Also a fine manager; he managed four different teams and never had a losing record. His specialty was said to be taking a team over in midseason and turning them around, which is a pretty good specialty to have.

Roy Hartzell -Played for the Yankees in the early 20th century, before they were a big deal...In 1911 he had 8 RBIs in a game, which sttod as a record for 22 years.

The first name that occurred to me that is shared by pros in all 3 major sports is Michael (Mike) Jackson.

Born near Scranton, PA, he was one of 4 brothers who all escaped a life in the coal mines by playing in the major leagues.
