Schumaker has always been pretty decent about getting on base. He has a career .344 OBP. He isn't the most inspiring candidate as an everyday CF, but without knowing what his role is yet, I do not see how you could call this signing "Awful."

I doubt they're bringing him in to play centerfield. I would say it's much more likely this is a possible precursor to a Phillips deal or he'll simply be a utility guy.

Every team needs a scrub who plays more than 1 position

I concur. I was just stating that we don't know how he will be used and in a vacuum, he is not a bad player, so I do not know how a poster can call the signing "awful."

Can Schumaker even play CF? I don't know if he can at this point in his life.
I see he started 12 games in CF for LA last year though.

Seems like he's more likely going to be the next 2b, and the Reds are going to move BP.

In fantasyland here, but if replacing Phillips with Schumaker lets us bring Choo back, it might be a net gain. (And I don't want to trade Phillips)

We already have Hannahan though for that role.
Doesn't really make much sense to cut Hannahan for a marginal improvement like this.

Schumaker's ability to play the OF isn't as valuable to the Reds, as we have DRob, Hamilton, and Heisey as depth guys there.

All of the above. If BP is dealt, he's the replacement. If BP isn't dealt and there's no CF signing, he's the CF. If BP is kept and the OF is filled, he's a sub.

This gives Walt a lot wiggle to make the right deal instead of a panic move.

Good insurance deal. Terrible "big" move.

I like it. There's a lot worse out there and he is consistent. Age scares me a bit but I'll take him. There's always the "he's been on a lot of winning teams" value as well. :-)
It's absolutely pathetic that people can't have an opinion from actually watching games and supplementing that with stats. If you voice an opinion that doesn't fit into a black/white box you will get completely misrepresented and basically called a tobacco chewing traditionalist...

Skip Schumaker is, apparently, the answer.

I'm struggling to understand the question.

Skip is a pretty good bet to hit about .270 with a .330 OBP, so he pretty much can give you what Infante gives you on offense.

He is 33, about to to 34 in February, but maybe you can get one more of those .290, .350 OBP years out of him. If you can, then you just solved your 2 hole problem. If not, he is a good bench player.
