    Corey the phenom!

I'm a baseball book junkie, and read about anything I can get my hands on at the local library. A few weeks ago, despite everything inside of me not to do this, I picked up Gene Wojciechowski's "Cubs Nation: 162 Games, 162 Stories, 1 Addiction." It's a book about the 2004 Cubs, managed by none other than Dusty Baker, and it's actually an interesting book, even if it IS about the Cubs.

Anyways, I found this paragraph particulary entertaining. The author was talking to espn.com's fantasy expert Eric Karabell about which Cubs should have breakout fantasy years. Here's what he said about one of Redszone's favorite all time players:

"Meanwhile, (Corey) Patterson has a huge upside here, but you've got to remember-with a torn ACL, will he run again? I don't think Patterson will run as much. He still has the potential to hit 30 homers and knock in 100. I expect he's healthy and ready to go. He probably has the biggest upside of anybody on that offense. I bet he gets close to 30 homers this season, but if he steals more than 15 bases, I'd be surprised. At some point, he'll learn how to take a walk and exercise patience . But it might not be this year. It should be. He should have been able to figure it out by now. Patterson isn't better than sosa, but he's their second-best fantasy player in terms of upside."

At least he learned how to take a walk that year.

Not to be contrary, but you peaked my curiosity.

    Patterson Career Stats
    Code:
    2000 ChC .167 .239 .333 .572
    2001 ChC .221 .266 .336 .602
    2002 ChC .253 .284 .392 .676
    2003 ChC .298 .329 .511 .840
    2004 ChC .266 .320 .452 .772
    2005 ChC .215 .254 .348 .602
    2006 Bal .276 .314 .443 .757
    2007 Bal .269 .304 .386 .690
    2008 Cin .205 .238 .344 .582
    2009 Was .133 .133 .133 .266
    Total -- .252 .291 .405 .696
Looks like Corey did better before he came to Cincinnati.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how Tevaras did before.

    Taveras Career Stats
    Code:
    2004 Hou .000 .000 .000 .000
    2005 Hou .291 .325 .341 .666
    2006 Hou .278 .333 .338 .671
    2007 Col .320 .367 .382 .749
    2008 Col .251 .308 .296 .604
    2009 Cin .240 .276 .286 .562
    Total -- .276 .322 .329 .651
Taveras had better numbers too before coming to Cincinnati. I almost want to say that they both had career lows in Cincy.
