Great outing by Homer. The few missed rotation turns do not seem like they threw him off.
Thanks for the updates, Cyclone, Reds44, On base machine and Indydave (and anyone else I missed). Its like I was there.

People said they wanted him to dominate, now he's doing it.

    The time is now.

Typical Todd Coffey he hits the 1st batter he faces.
FYI. I was at the game and the ball hit the bottom of the bat not the batter. I was on the 2nd row behind homeplate. There was a distinctive ball on wood sound. Sweet came out to argue for about 5 minutes when it happened. The batter didn't even rub either of his hands afterward and the ball was clocked at 92 on the scoreboard radar gun.
There are 10 types of people in this world. Those that understand binary and those that don't.

They wheeled a 3x4 steel safe into the clubhouse Sunday morning to store the players' valuables. It took four guys to lift it off a dolly and onto a table.

Said pitcher Kent Mercker: "What's that, Junior Griffey's wallet?"

I say that we leave our best prospects in the minors forever and just dominate.
I'm not saying that Homer should come up but McBeth and Votto should be here right now. They aren't going to get any better in AAA (they're already great there) and we need to see them in the Bigs. Wow, our minor leagues have turned around quickly. I would like to see this trend continue.

I feel compelled to note, in the midst of Homer-Fest 2007 (May Edition), that Richie Gardner had another strong outing tonight.

If history tells us anything about pitching injuries, it tells us that the strength continues to build for the year+ following surgery. Hopefully there is still improvement to be made in Gardner's arm and he can continue to develop where he left off.

It'd be a fantastic turn of fortune to get him back on track towards the majors, seeing as he was once one of the brighter stars in the minors.

How's your brother handling the ridiculous demotion?

I read a story the other day (and I kick myself for not saving the link) where several unnamed Nats players thought Narron's treatment of him was totally bogus by using him until his arm fell off then demoting him.

Any way the Reds could get three or four more Homer Baileys?

It's funny reading through this thread; it reminds me of that Eddie Murphy sketch where the starving guy gets a Ritz cracker and acts like it's filet mignon.

Sure, Bailey tastes like filet mignon to a generation of Reds' fans who have literally NEVER seen a legit power arm come up through their minors. But, in reality, he's one arm. Cyclone's right--the trio of relievers may, in the grand scheme and taken together, might mean just as much to the franchise in the next four years.

16 months, and that's the best Wayne can do. Good heavens. What an awful pen. What a disgrace of a GM-ing job.

Nobody has 3 or 4 Homer Baileys in their system.

The Reds should be happy to have 1 Homer Bailey in their system. The real problem is that all they have had for years is the 1 Homer Bailey or the 1 Jay Bruce, etc and then a huge fall off to guys like Dustin Mosley and Phil Dumatrait.

The key is to develop a spectrum of talent, not just the top and bottom ends.

Its beginning to happen. It takes time, but I think our system is heading in the absolute right direction.

While they might not be exhibiting the skills that Homer exhibits right now, pitchers like Homer exist elsewhere; in fact, I'd wager that some farm system will churn out four aces from their system in the next 5-7 years (though they may not pitch for their originating team at the MLB level). No one would have begun to compare Lincecum to Bailey on their respective draft days, but guess what, Lincecum's probably better. Noah Lowry, Matt Cain, and Liriano all sat in the Giants' farm system just a couple of years ago; all four are ace-level prospects. I know what a good farm looks and sounds like. And the Reds with one ace prospect is not it.

Point being, is that a lot of times high-ceiling guys don't exhibit their ceilings early on and a ton of ubertalents flop. Homer's exciting, but he's ONE arm. That can't be stressed enough. It's not wrongheaded to get just as excited by three high-ceiling bullpen guys, IMO.

Get smarter, get aggressive, and the aces will follow.

Dustin Mosley might be a huge fall off, but he also a huge step up from guys like Lohse. I love how the Angels are handling him. An occasional start, but mostly using him in relief. And he's really pitching well.

And yet the Reds keep running Lohse out there. Yeah, he had a decent game Monday. CGSO. But it was against the Pirates, who despite winning 3 of four, do not intimidate offensively.
