When is the last time Jocketty toook a big risk with only short term payoff? I certainly can't think of any; he just doesn't work that way. Even when he's made big moves, there's been an expectation of long-term value involved.

For the record, there is very similar chatter on the Cards boards and blogs these days. Many fans don't see 2014 as a year to go for it, considering all the injuries and poor performance.

to be honest it makes the most sense. not crazy about it but with votto and BP out about another month it might be reality.

Choo is the only one I can think of. And he wasn't exactly a big risk.

Not disagreeing with you at all. It's a good point.

However, I will say this.. IF the Reds can get a rental player at 2b, 1b, or OF for a C level prospect with a short time commitment that is close to an average level starter,
that would help a lot. That would be worth doing. That would help lessen the loss of Phillips and Votto.
Starting Pena and Santiago every day instead almost guarantees we will slip out of the WC race.
They have performed admirably, but it should be easy to get a short term upgrade for them.
The bench is so thin from injuries that playing time shouldn't be too hard to find for the new guy, even if Votto and BP come back this year.

You can discuss it, like most do on message boards. You can rip on me as a pointless poster, which is fine, or, as usually happens on this board you can sweep it into some 100 page thread that is only read by 10 or 12 of you, and other fans like myself by pass it due to it being all over the places.

Like I said, from what I have heard, from someone who would have a good idea of the subject, is that the Reds will try to only make a move at this deadline which will help them for 2015. It is what it is for 2014.

I would not spend one dime or one prospect on a rental player for this year.

Everything needs to be focused on next season.

If an acquisition also helps in 2014, all the better. Great. But IMO the Reds are too far behind to spend resources on this year.

Focusing on games behind, number of teams ahead, and the expected time for Votto's rehab and to a lesser extent Phillips' rehab.
