Kearns option not picked up by Washington...

    From Rotoworld w/ Rotoworld comments:

Nationals declined OF Austin Kearns' $10 million option for 2010.

This might be the no-brainer of the offseason. Kearns hit just .195/.336/.305 this season with three home runs and 51 strikeouts in 174 at-bats. The Nationals handed him a $1 million buyout to go away.

Time for him to return to the Reds.

No surprise here. Kearns will probably be out of baseball for a year or two and then make some kind of feel good story comeback. This guy looks done.

I noticed Washington kept him on the MLB roster on the bench for the last few months of the season, but would not play him. What was the point of this from their standpoint I wondered?

Not sure myself. Perhaps they didn't want to use an option? Of course, this doesn't make much sense if they were planning to dump him.

Hey, wasn't he involved in some kind of trade a few years back? I seem to recall some discussion maybe?

If we would do a minor league contract with an invite to spring training then go for it, but that is all.

What a disappointment. When he was locked in there for a while he was sure fun to watch.

......with Balentien, Heisey, Stubbs, Dickerson, Dorn, Bruce, Francisco, and possibly signing Gomes.......all in the mix?

    Why?

Yeah, there's there's really no need for another below average OF here. Even if he did just have a bad year, he definitely is on the decline.

On the off chance the good Austin Kearns magically reappears he would be better than all of those guys. It's a long shot, but also a pretty low risk move if he would accept it.

He wouldn't, Big Donkey isn't here anymore, unfortunately.

I doubt he would accept but you never know. I would bring him in for a Spring (Training) Fling on a minor league contract. You never know.

Nah, we don't need more OF. He's been on the decline for several years now. I don't see much chance of him getting back to his prior form.
