    Re: Votto shushing the crowd?

This has got to be the dumbest debate I think Ive ever witnessed. If you dont understand why things are done just leave it at that. your morals arent going to change the game.

as Indy already said, Ooops that slipped will always be in a pitchers vocabulary. The pitcher is the one with the ball in his hand. Even though technically the pitcher is on defense, He is the one with the ball and the hitters should respect that and in a way fear it. The ball could "slip" at any moment. So why be an idiot and taunt him?

But not all brushback pitches are meant to hit the batter. Sometimes its to do just that. Brush them back off the plate. Take Votto for instance. The next plate appearance when votto stands in, if Darvish is still pitching, chances are votto is going to be pretty confident and comfortable in there after just going yard. So how do you break someones confidence? Remind him you are the one with the ball and "sometimes you arent that accurate" Not hitting the batter, but throwing inside to ALSO (knowing you arent going to hit him) set up your next few pitches. If you brush him off the plate you are almost setting up a breaking ball on the outside corner or a fast ball low and inside.

And like someone else already stated there is a written rule and a penalty for someone who hits a batter. But you cant just start throwing people in jail (isnt that what you get for assault) for every batter hit. Because the line already stated before and probably a million times in this debate already. All the pitcher has to say is oooopps my bad it slipped. And if its the second hit batter of the game he could get ejected, depending on the umpire and fined.

Cole Hammels plunked Bryce Harper, essentially for being a good player as a teenager.

He admitted that's why he did it.

How much time off should Hammels had received?

What if Harper had been injured?

For no other reason than he was good last year?

That Harper kid has a history of on field antics. Yeah it's old school, what Hammels did. Amazingly he admitted it. Welcome to the big leagues.

    He plays really hard.

You'd think Cincy would love that. Kind of reminds me of that Peter Edwards Rose dude.

Yep, and that brash Rose kid took a lot of guff when he first came up and a few in the ribs.

I'm getting a kick out of people saying that some us "don't understand" why things are done the way they are. I completely understand it, but that doesn't make it any less unnecessary or barbaric.

It literally accomplishes nothing expect maybe making pitchers ego feel a bit better

Get him out the next time, how ridiculous and sad a statement. Tell that to the lesser athletic kids being taunted on the playground .Bad behavior should be punished in children and adults.

We love to taunt each other in games of cards, other games with the family, all in fun. That's different.

There is a time and place for everything, not in public .Act like a showboat when you go to a job interview, bank loan, etc you get the idea.
If you haven't been taught respect as a child ,you need some lessons as an adult, even if you are in MLB.

These guys are trying to make a living for themselves and their families, not just playing with friends and family. It's sad to me that a lot don't understand that it is bad behavior.

So instead of getting him out the next time, the non-ridiculous thing is to pop someone?

Pop him, then pick him off first.

Fear is the motivator,in children and adults.Sometimes corporeal punishment is necessary when words are not enough.

Fear should be the beginning, hopefully not the end.

Fear should be the beginning, hopefully not the end.

So now it's corporeal punishment to pop someone on purpose?

This will hurt me more than it hurts you?
    For admiring a home run?

Raisor, the thing is baseball has evolved into this, good or bad. You can't put the toothpaste back in the tube. What would you do to remedy things if they are so outrageous to you. Consider how rare it is when a pitcher fesses up. As an aside would Hamels have fessed up had he shattered Harper's wrist? Doubt it.

If a pitcher is ejected for intentionally throwing at a batter then hit him really hard with a lengthy suspension. The pitcher doesn't have to admit he intentionally threw at the batter. If in the umpires judgement he did then eject the pitcher and give him a 2 week suspension. It amazes me that people are defending this practice because well it has been going on forever and thats just how the players police the game themselves.

If hitters want to stand and admire a HR then just let them and get over the bruised ego trip that you think they are showing the pitcher up.
"Boys, I'm one of those umpires that misses 'em every once in a while so if it's close, you'd better hit it." Cal Hubbard
