Redzone Minor League Prospect Ranking #39 & 40

Avain Rachal and Josh Smith grab slots 37 and 38. Number 39 and 40 up next.
99% of all numbers only tell 33% of the story so when looking at the numbers remember that numbers is plural...

Well, I've been stuck on Soto and Chacin for several polls, and they've made no discernible headway. Since Thompson has, and he's next on my list, I'll switch to him. And while in the raw shortstop mode, let's take a flyer on Vargas. His numbers shout, but on top of that he was noted by J.J. Cooper (#31), which makes me think that a scout or development guy (or both) must have spoken highly of him.

I'm going with Thompson (nice debt for a prep SS) and Elizalde (who hit well in the Mexican League).

Sebastian Elizalde - International man of mystery.

He was signed by the Reds out of the Mexican League in May of 2013. At that point in time he was just 21 years. As noted he was hitting well in 123 PA. .328/.361/.448/.809.

It seems odd that he would not get one plate appearance the rest of the year. He did, however, appear in one game for the AZL Reds. Per baseball-reference.com, he appeared in one game as a Reds' farmhand, as a pitcher. He threw 2/3s of an inning, allowing one hit while striking out two.

Maybe they are converting him to a pitcher? Who knows?

UPDATE: I went back to the box score for that particular game and it was Jacob Izuld and not Sebastian Elizalde who posted that line. It was just an error in baseball-ref.

I have not been too active on some of the more recent votes, but I am shocked to still see Dan Langfield on the board. He was our #11 prospect last year and I know he missed all of 2013 with an injury, but medicine has come a far way. Let's not forget Langfield's 13.14 K/9 debut in 2012. Marc Hulet of fangraphs had him as our #6 prospect last year and while I do not think he warrants a top 20 this year, he is certainly top 40.

He got major shoulder surgery. I know I'm waiting to see what kind of pitcher he is if he recovers before I put any expectations on him.

Langfield and Felt both have issues regarding their future - good prospects but I think are just waiting to see.

I see now that Chacin is in scoring position. Should have stuck with him.

Sticking with Chacin and getting on the Thompson bandwagon now that Josh Smith is in. Looks like a one-vote deal.

Jake, are you planning on going to 50? The way you're doing it, two at a time, it seems quick and painless. And it would give us a chance to document a few more guys. . . . Whatever you see fit to do. You've done a terrific job with this.

Yeah - I thought 50 would be a good number - that ought to get us into regular ST activity

Im voting for Crabbe and writing in Brett Marshall
(Referring to Jack Hannahan signing with a Korean team)
Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.
