Just looking at some of the more recent drafts and international signings. It seems to me that most teams in baseball are willing to take more chances on high ceiling guys via amateur signing than in the draft. Is this because guys that are in the draft are more polished and closer to being finished products? Are international guys more raw and signed based on tools? Am I wrong, am I right? Thoughts?
International guys are more raw by default. They don't grow up playing organized baseball. The good ones are brought in by the time they are 12 or 13 and basically just have practice and workouts for the next few years in order to try and get signed. Their actual on field game time is more often than not incredibly limited. Top it off with they are 16-17 when they get signed instead of 18-22 and there is going to be even more rawness with them compared to the "draft crop". Most guys are signed based on tools. Teams think they can take tools and turn them into skills. It is very difficult to turn skills into better tools though.Originally Posted by izzy's dad
One thing that makes a difference with bonuses in the international world is that you are competing against everyone to sign a guy. So it drives the prices up on those players, where as in the draft, you are really only competing against yourself and a college offer.
