Maddux has evolved into quite the mercenary in his twilight years.

I'm surprised the waiver pick wasn't blocked. Since it's well-known that he won't go to a team outside of SoCal, it would be easy for another team to have stopped a trade that would help the Dodgers.

    Agreed...and I don't think this is a one-month rental for LA.

The Dodgers may also be thinking bigger picture here: Maddux has always made his primary residence in Las Vegas. Unless I have missed it, he has given not indications that he wants to retire after this season. Los Angeles may have found themselves another starter for 2009.

Then the Reds may finally be able to beat the Dodgers once or twice in 2009.

Hasn't Maddox been an LA rental a couple of other times?

I hope Maddux keeps pitching. He's been roughly a league average starter this season. While his record is only 6-9, his ERA of 3.99 is just a tick above the NL average of 3.90.
In the previous four seasons since he left the Braves, Maddux has won 16, 13, 15 and 14 games. He now has 353 career wins, only 20 victories away from the NL record of 373 shared by Christy Mathewson and Grover Cleveland Alexander. I don't know that Maddux, who will be 43 years old next April, has 20 more wins left in his arm, but I'd like to see him break that record. I never expected anyone to threaten the mark.
Maddux is also only one win behind Roger Clemens to become the winningest living pitcher, and ten wins behind Warren Spahn's 363; Spahn has more wins than any other pitcher in the last 60 years.

I kind of expect Maddux to re-sign with the Pads for next season. He seems to like SD better than LA.

Of course, if Greg decided to retire (which I don't expect him to do) then maybe the Dodgers have found their pitching coach for their AAA farm team (Las Vegas).

Wish the Reds would have been savy enough in the past couple of years to plug Maddox into the starting roation. Would've been nice to have league average pitching + the benefit of Mr. Pitching Computer Brain around this pitching knowledge starved orginization. Imagine having Soto and Maddux flaoting around giving out pointers to the kids.

Maybe there's no way he would ever sign with us, but would have been a slick move.

(and yes, I'm totally biased because Maddux is one of my favorites)

You answered your own question, sort of.

Maddux was going to play on the coast, in a pitchers park.

While that formula would seem to make sense, I have heard Maddux comment several times that he has no interest in becoming a pitching coach--not even at the major league level.

I can't remember where I heard or read this--but it was definitely sometime this season.

Not in the LV city proper, but plenty of people live out in Summerlin.

    Great area.
