    Cincinnati Reds Contract Obligations

This is just intended as a reference. Feel free to discuss how good/bad the contracts are. To make the list, a player must be on the 40-man roster or have Major League experience. I apologize if the format is too sloppy--I couldn't think of a better way to do it.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

It's really sad to see Castro and Stanton on books for 2009.

Are we actually commited to them or are we only out a buyout? It's a shame we're out either one but a buyout beats eating a whole year's salary

    archive this-- it's useful.

Reds are in a remarkably strong state in terms of next year's arbitrations (EdE alone unless Coffey improves or Bray hits super 2 jackpot), next year's FAs (Dunn alone; Jr is surely gone), current player options (nobody significant). There's a dicey Rule V guy, but otherwise, it really doesn't get structured better than this.

now, we just need better players

Castro and Stanton are both club options for 2009 although Stanton has a vesting clause.

Ugh, the Griffey contract is killer right now....imagine what another 17 million free would do for this team!

    you're late to the party

in fact, Jr's contract looks better now than it has in years.

    Re: Cincinnati Reds Contract Obligations

    Quick question on Stanton's contract.

Assume that Stanton is cut in spring training,

OKAY NOW STOP CELEBRATING, THIS IS ONLY HYPOTHETICAL

If another team(say the Cardinals) picks him up,

AGAIN STOP CELEBRATING, NO NEED TO BEGIN IMAGINING STANTON BEING BROUGHT IN TO FACE DUNN LATE IN A GAME, WE'RE ONLY HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING HERE.

Anyways, if the the other team picks him up, do they pick up the same contract he signed with the Reds or do they write a new one? Meaning would the vesting option transfer over to the team he signs with?

My understanding is that they would only have to pay him the major league minimum with the Reds picking up the rest of the tab for 2008 but if his option vested then whoever picked him up would be responsible for his entire 2009 contract.

My understanding is it would depend upon whether the Cards picked him up on waivers or did they wait until he cleared waivers and became a free agent. If he's a waiver wire pickup then the Cards would take over the contract. If not then the Reds are responsible for the 2008 contract, plus the buyout (but not the incentives ) minus the major league minimum which the Cards would be responsible for.

Hmmm... I'm not sure. I don't think a team is responsible for buyout clauses once a player is not on their roster, unless, of course, nobody picks him up. I could be wrong though.

I'm not sure either but it was my recollection that the Reds were still on the hook for Danny Graves' buyout. For example, I doubt that the Reds could cut KGR in Sept if they fall out of the race and escape that $4mill buyout.
