I understand that most teams don't win titles as frequently as teams like New York (or LA if you're an NBA fan, Kentucky if you're a college hoops fan) -- but just because a title is a rarity doesn't mean that shouldn't be the entire focus of a season.
I enjoy the regular season -- the individual wins and losses, individual performances -- but I can't fathom ever being satisfied with anything less than a championship.
My thing -- I was also one of those kids that had entire weekends ruined by losses in sports I played. I understand everyone enjoys life differently.

I would like to see the Reds lose the first 59 games of the season, than go on a 103 game win streak.
No, they get labeled as the worst fans in sports because they have an entitlement mentality -- they feel they deserve to win a title every season and they make statements like "America wants to see the Lakers/Yankees in the finals" or "It's every high school kid's dream to go to Kentucky."
Wanting to win and refusing to accept mediocrity as an OK outcome isn't and shouldn't be just a Yankees or Red Sox thing.

What's a "spurtsm"? Are those some new types of slacks?
Nah. It never gets to that point with me.
Talk to a Kentucky fan (or an OSU football fan or a 'Bama football fan or a Louisville basketball fan or an IU basketball fan or a Duke basketball fan-- they're just about everywhere) long enough, and you'll hear (likely within the first 15 minutes or so), "I won't apologize for high expectations for my team." They'll then go on and on about how it's a national championship or bust.
Horsecrap.
That's a piss poor fan who, in most years, is among the Cadre of the Miserable. By claiming "high expectations," these fans feel justified to rail against players, managers, and anyone else who might get in the way. They don't cheer for the team or a players or even the situation-- they wait, furious and miserable, arms crossed, blood pressure high, watching and waiting for the inevitable screw up just so they can say, "I told you so."
They don't root for players, laundry, or anything else because it's so much easier to complain once they prove their humanity.
(And, yeah, that's a strong opinion.)
