I don't think it will ever happen. Florida really seems to like that guy.

I still think Magglio Ordonez is the best option. Only 3 years on his contract. He'd be 35, 36, and 37 during that span. It shouldn't take that much to get him, since Detroit is mainly looking to unload his contract.

we'd have to severely deplete our farm system and i'd prefer a ss who can provide plus defense.

The Marlins will trade him-they pretty much said the same thing about Cabrera.
Might take a couple yrs,but it will happen.

the marlins will trade him eventually cuz if they don't they won't have the lowest payroll but that doesn't mean he'd be cheap (in terms of prospects that would have to be dealt or $). i'd much rather trade for or draft the next hram.

I sticking with my original, Ichiro and Roy Halladay. Though I now realize Halladay is not a FA. Ichiro can teach Bruce the real way to play RF. He can perform his usual .300, 200 hits, 35 SB, and be much closer to being on a winning team than he ever will be in Seattle. Imagine swapping Griffy for Ichiro, if Griff decided to return to Seattle to finish off his HOF career.

And Halladay is the real deal as well, consistent, pitches 200+ innings, healthy and a gamer. Not sure what we'd have to send them, and since Toronto seemed to come on at the end of the season (thank Halladay), they might want to keep him another year. But I still love this lineup and rotation as much as anything with Holliday in it. Though I could live happily with Magglio in there instead of Ichiro...

    Ichiro RF
    BP 2nd
    Votto 1st
    Bruce lf
    Edwin 3rd
    Dickerson CF
    Hannigan C
    AGon SS

Rotation: Halladay, Volquez, Harang, Cueto and Arroyo

Give them Homer, Maloney, Freel, and a couple of decent lower prospects. Thats the real dream part, lol.

That's how I'd like to see our rotation in march but if the other 4 look good in the spring (and Ramirez) i wouldn't mind it if they made Arroyo available. He's been consistently inconsistent and his contract is becoming more expensive by the year. It will more than double to $9.5 million in '09 then $11m in '10/'11. If Volquez doesn't drop off too much, Harang rebounds, and Cueto improves Arroyo could eventually become a very expensive #4 starter on this team and that's something the reds can't afford.

What about Moises Alou? I rally don't know if he will retire. His bat still had some life in it last year before he pulled a hamstring. he might be a big help to EE as a mentor. Right now EE is somewhat alone as the team's only latin starter. I really don't think he learns anything from Gonzalez or Valentin.

    I don't see a reason why that team wouldn't win 90-95 games.

that team could win 90 but you'll have thrown away money too. i'd rather have a healthy agon than an overpaid renteria.

Ramirez got a 6-year $70 million extension (which is a steal). He's not going anywhere.

Then that opens a door for Beltre for a couple years til Soto is ready.
Dye is my prediction. Also, fun fact: Ordonez and Dye were born on exactly the same day: January 28th, 1974. Also, FWIW, when the Sox let Maggs go and replaced him with Dye, they won the WS and he was MVP. And when the Tigers made the WS the next year, they didn't win and Ordonez wasn't MVP. So Dye it is. And forget Beltre; here's the plan:

    1. Trade EE + for Dye.
    2. Move Phillips to short because he's batting 6th now and isn't expected to be a big run producer.
    3. Hairston/Keppinger at 2nd
    4. Gonzalez/ Keppinger/ Freel compete for 3rd
    5. ????
    6. Profit
FIRE DUSTY Never mind. The man is clearly a genius.
