To be fair to the poster, most of us watch these guys primarily in spring training. Most don't watch a lot of minor league ball.

And when a player like Ravin pitches in the spring with the big club, presumably he is trying to make an impression. Not quite the same as a veteran just getting his reps in.

As for Ravin, I wish him luck, I know some folks liked him a lot. But his minor league numbers haven't been good, very high walk rates.

Was someone suggesting Lotzkar had trade value?

Re: Lotzkar and Ravin designated for assignment

My guess is Lotzkar passes waivers, the Reds sign him back and he goes back to the minors. Last time they can do that. I believe he is eligible for the Rule 5 now, too, but with his health issues that is also a low risk that anyone will want him on a roster all season - they can only partially hide him on the DL. So more than likely Lotzkar will be back, imo, to see if he can overcome these arm issues.

Players that have been outrighted before have the option of immediately becoming free agents. Otherwise they become free agents at the end of the season.

And unless the player has been outrighted before, he can be sent to the minors without consent (unless he has at least five years of Major League service time).

If for some reason the Reds decide they want to avoid Lotzkar and Ravin hitting free agency, they can add them to the 40-man roster later on. However that's unheard of unless they have an agreement to corroborate it. For example, the Reds could re-add them to the 40-man roster and send them to the Arizona Fall League.

It also has to deal with minor league service time, so I believe both will be minor league free agents at the end of the season.

(I know he's still technically only 23...but Gruler only just turned 30 last week)
I believe Lotzkar was a supplemental pick, #52 or #53.

Minor league service time has very little to do with outright assignments. Once a player reaches 6+ years of minor league service time without being added to the 40-man roster, the player has the option of becoming a free agent. I'll refer you to Article XX-D:
ARTICLE XX-D: Any MLB player who has accrued at least three years of MLB service time, or who was eligible for Salary Arbitration as a "Super Two" after the previous season, and/or who has been outrighted previously in his career, has the right to be a free-agent if the player is outrighted to the minors. The player can exercise this right upon being outrighted, or (but only in the case of a player who has accrued at least three years of MLB Service Time and/or has been outrighted to the minors previously in his career) he can opt to defer the right until after the conclusion of the MLB regular season (he is given three days to decide if he is outrighted during Spring Training or the MLB regular season, and he has eight days to make up his mind if he is outrighted during the off-season). If a player eligible to be a free-agent under Article XX-D elects to be a free-agent immediately after being outrighted, the player's contract is terminated and the player receives no termination pay. (Because unsigned players do not receive termination pay, players eligible to be minor league free-agents under Article XX-D who are outrighted during the off-season before being tendered a contract for the following season almost always opt for free-agency immediately). But if the outrighted player accepts the Outright Assignment, the player's existing contract remains in force, and the player can elect free-agency beginning on the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season up through October 15th. (A player who had the option to elect free-agency upon being outrighted only because he had been eligible for Salary Arbitration as a "Super Two" after the previous season does NOT have the right to defer free-agency until after the conclusion of the MLB regular season). However, an outrighted player who deferred the right to be an Article XX-D minor league free-agent until the conclusion of the MLB regular season is NOT eligible to be a free-agent if the player is added back to an MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) prior to the conclusion of the MLB regular season.

Ravin is just like any other pitcher though, he only has had X amount of time in spring training to get ready. While he may be out there trying to make an impression, he still has only been throwing a baseball for two weeks when the games start.

Was including supplemental picks in first round.

Looking back at the supplemental picks since that 2002 draft, Frazier and Boxberger both made the bigs, and Winker and Lorenzen look promising. At this pace, Gelalich will likely be the next guy not to make it (although it's still very, very early).

That's probably about how the headline read at the time of the trade.

Well, regardless I am almost certain both will be a free agent come October.

Brewers Designate Blake Lalli For Assignment

By Steve Adams [September 19 at 4:27pm CST]

The Brewers have designated Blake Lalli for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot for Josh Ravin, whom they claimed off waivers from the Reds earlier today, according to MLB Daily Dish's Chris Cotillo (Twitter link).

Lalli, 30, went 3-for-24 with three singles for Milwaukee this season and is 5-for-39 in his brief Major League career. The catcher/first baseman has a much stronger track record at Triple-A, where he has a solid slash line of .268/.312/.420 with 19 homers in 651 plate appearances. Lalli attended Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C. and signed with the Cubs as an undrafted free agent in 2006.
