Cardinals, Bluejays to swap Rolen, Glaus

    from rotoworld:

The Cardinals and Blue Jays will swap Scott Rolen and Troy Glaus if the third basemen will waive their no-trade clauses, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports.

Glaus, who is believed to prefer the West Coast, may want some financial incentive for waiving his no-trade clause. Rolen figures to be less picky, as he just wants away from Tony La Russa. The two players would also have to pass physicals for the deal to be completed. Rolen has the more significant health concerns because of his chronic shoulder troubles, but Glaus is coming off foot surgery.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

They're both jerks. Pretty soon they'll be playing somewhere else.

If they're both 100% healthy, Rolen is the better player. But he's not and I wouldn't be surprised if never plays 140+ games again. Cardinals get more reliable offense. Blue Jays get more defense. A surprising non-starter for a deal with 2 big names.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I thought someone was kidding when I heard this on ESPN radio last night.

    Old 3B for older 3B.

I guess it makes sense on some level. LaRussa wants Rolen out of STL, and Glaus hasn't ever been liked by any organization that's had him, apparently.

I think the Cards win this trade. Not a big Glaus fan, but he is younger, less injured and signed for fewer years.

I'm just glad the Reds didn't get involved. I had visions of them trading Edwin for Glaus and I doubt it would have turned out well. OTOH, I would rather have Glaus right now than Rolen.

Me too. That would have been really depressing... especially because the Reds don't have that kind of cash to throw at a 3B. I'm hoping that any left over money right now is being allocated toward either pitching or a Dunn LTC.

Zzzzz. Two bad character guys with injury histories. I look at the Cardinals on paper and see a scary bad team. I guess if Carpenter dominates and you've got Pujols there is some hope.
This is the time. The real Reds organization is back.

How is Rolen a "bad character guy"? He has problems with LaRussa, who apparently has some character issues of his own (glug, glug, vroom, vroom).

Glaus is no Terry Pendleton. I'd say the Cards are gaining a bigger character problem than they're getting rid of.

I think it is safe to say they both needed a change of scenery. But you're right, Glaus somehow seems to change addresses quite often. Plausible to think he's a bit of a cancer, while Rolen might just be a bit of a prima donna.

Two anonymous players said he was a clubhouse "cancer" in June. I don't want to get into a huge argument because frankly I shouldn't have said I'm so sure he's a bad guy. I just think there was enough smoke with the LaRussa whining and two players calling him out.

He also had major documented problems with Larry Bowa. Maybe he is just a moody guy, I dunno.

    Doesn't mean I'm right though.
