Cardinals Release Former First Round Pick

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [June 3 at 2:32pm CST]
According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Tyler Herron is no longer a part of the Cardinals' plans. They released the former first round pick today. Herron, 22, was the 46th selection in the 2005 draft, the same draft that produced Colby Rasmus for St. Louis. Herron pitched well as recently as 2007.*

In 45.2 innings at Double A this year, Herron collected 37 strikeouts and allowed 70 baserunners for an ERA of 4.37. Not inspired numbers, but not bad for a 22-year-old. I'd expect someone to pick Herron up, especially given his history as a top prospect.

Do you think Walt picks him up? What type of stuff does he have?

Let's start a collection of young, failed draft picks.

    I'm only half kidding.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

I would think that the Cards braintrust consulted Dave Duncan on this kid, but 22 is still 22. He might be worth a shot.

Duncan can fix anyone. I don't know why they pay anything for pitching. Just bring 'em in and let Dave fix 'em. At least that's what George Grande said.

From what folks are saying on FutureRedbirds.com Herron did little to impress the big league coaches and he had coachability issues. The front office is passing it off as strictly performance issues and they wanted to give other guys in their system his innings. I would still take a shot he sits around 88-91 with a pretty good curve, ya never know with young kids when it might click.

I'd have to say this kid must've ticked off someone that matters in the organization to be cut loose as a 1st rounder at 22.

I would have to agree. Coachability is a big deal. If he decided to pull a Brett Tomko, then he made his own bed.
It's absolutely pathetic that people can't have an opinion from actually watching games and supplementing that with stats. If you voice an opinion that doesn't fit into a black/white box you will get completely misrepresented and basically called a tobacco chewing traditionalist...

All joking aside, accumulating formerly higly rated and drafted arms who have fallen by the wayside for a look-see in the minors strikes me as a sound practice, since the development of pitchers is uneven, at best. That is different from the former regime's 5-tool fetish in my mind's eye.

For what it's worth, often times, Bowden seemed to pick up pitchers just based on the fact that they were drafted early or top prospects. It was cheaper than actually scouting, I guess. Anyway, I remember him acquiring guys like Todd Van Poppel, Gabe White, Ben Van Ryn, Joey Hamilton, Shawn Estes, Scott Ruffcorn, Trever Miller, Ron Villone, Rick Greene, Steve Soderstrom, Paul Wilson, Jay Peterson, Chris Haas, John Curtice, Jeff Austin, Seth Etherton, etc.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. A lot of the time, they would come to the organization and instantly become some of the top prospects in the organization. The times sure have changed, and I'm really glad for it.
