    Agreed. McKinney seems to be a great combination of upside and character. If we could get a combination of a high upside arm and a high upside bat with our first two picks, I would be very happy.

    Here's a little more on Windle

    http://www.mndaily.com/sports/athlet...ttracts-scouts

    As a reliever, Windle only needed the slider and fastball. The changeup has been reliable for him as a starter, and Windle called it “a nice add to my repertoire.”

    Windle’s bag of pitches starts with his fastball. He consistently throws it in the low-90s, and it’s topped out at 94 mph this season.

    Then comes the slider.

    “He’s got what I call a swing-and-miss slider,” Oakes said. “Some guys got more of a pitch-to-contact breaking ball.”

    Windle’s slider breaks away from left-handed hitters and down and in against righties.

    “If they can have a breaking ball that’s effective against right-handed hitters, that’s key,” Oakes said. “That pitch separates him.”
    [Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

    My main man John Sickels over at www.minorleagueball.com has a new mock draft up, with the Reds getting Ryne Stanek at 27 and Hunter Green at 38. I'd be very happy with that haul.

    The flamethrowing Stanek was a candidate for the #1 overall pick before an inconsistent Spring and Green is a high upside HS LHP from Kentucky.

    For the record, I'm not interested in Windle.

    I like that mock too. Gotta love adding two high upside arms. What dont you like about Windle? He has good stuff, relatively few miles on his arm and two major league ready pitches. It sounds like his change could be useable, as a third pitch, too. What am I missing?

    I'd love to see Stanek fall to the Reds.
    “I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

    BA's latest mock released today has the Reds taking Austin Wilson. That would make me very happy.

    The other two names they mention are Billy McKinney and Marco Gonzales. I would be pleased with McKinney, not so much with Gonzales, a pitcher who lacks upside.

    Wilson = A+ pick
    McKinney = A pick

    Gonzales = D pick

    Please give me upside. Wilson may be in the Top 10 of my "Big Board."

    Re: 2013 MLB Draft order with Bonus pool numbers

    I am skeptical of Wilson, especially with other interesting RH bats like Judge and Ervin possibly available in the late 20s (along with McKinney). I did not like Wilson's swing coming out of HS, and despite his lofty prospect status he has never dominated at the college level. I am wary, too, of the "chiseled speciman" effect. Plus, you've got his elbow injury this year, which may threaten his plus arm down the road.

    My simple preference is for 1 hitter and 1 pitcher in their first two picks, and I think I'd prefer an OF other than Wilson. But big RH power in an athletic guy is a pretty scarce commodity, so I wouldn't hate the pick. BTW, I am intrigued by the athleticism and multiposition flexibility of JaCoby Jones. Maybe not at 27/38, but in the 2nd round, that's a nice high ceiling pick.

    Wilson sounds to me like Drew Stubbs part 2.

    Austin Wilson always reminded me more of Preston Wilson, who himself was like an Eric Davis-lite. Wilson may not be able to handle CF, but thats who he reminds me of, maybe with a little less power/bat speed.

    They really don't sound alike at all.

    If you think about it, there are several legit similarities.

    Both highly regarded "baseball athletes" coming out of HS, both turned down large offers to go to major college programs. Both played well enough in college to maintain prospect status, although their college numbers do not overwhelm. Both are toolsy RH-hitting outfielders with swings that give scouts a little pause.

    Saying that one is reminiscent of the other is not saying they are carbon copies.

    Stubbs had a big advantage in speed. Stubbs had a big advantage in defense. Wilson has a big advantage in power potential (while Stubbs had good power potential, it was mostly tied to the fact that he was a center fielder, where most guys don't have any home run power). There are similar in that both were considered good athletes overall and there are some questions that they would both struggle to hit for average. But you could say that about tons of guys.

    As noted, there are more similarities. You simply dismissed the original observation, but it was valid.
