Having an abundance of good catchers is never a bad thing. You can always trade one for a missing piece somewhere else. Look at the Rangers. They've got at least 2 catchers in their system I'd rather have over Bako/Ross/Valentine. The Mariners have at least 2 I'd take over Bako/Ross too.

Posey has demonstrated he can play any position, so he's not totally locked into catching, IMHO. If he's there at 7, I hope the Reds take him.

    Posey could go #1.

Either Beckham or Posey could be selected No. 1 today.
The Rays select first in today's 2008 First-Year Player Draft and their list has been pared down to two: Tim Beckham and Buster Posey.

Posey makes the most sense for Tampa. They are winning now and he could move through the system fairly quickly. IMO, he is a better fit than Beckham because he could produce quicker.

    Exactly my thought.

I don't care what position Posey plays.

With a bat like his, move him up. Quickly.

Agreed, he'd make a good combo with David Price the #1 last year.

Posey does have the benefit of hitting in the (old school) Coors field of college baseball. Combine that with a metal bat and I don't trust his power numbers... certainly not for $12M.

I don't think the Reds even consider him if he's still demanding 8 figures.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I agree with RMR. If his contract demands are serious then there is no way ANYONE should take him. That price tag is so far over his talent level that one scout actually joked about it to another scout before he was informed that it was actually a serious number floated out there.

Pay him 12 million, but only if you can lock him up for 6-7 years.

I'm not sure how seriously to take Posey's demands. I hear this guy is his agent.

Mr. Posey will require $12 million or we'll shoot your entire draft board into space.

I wouldn't take them seriously just based around the fact that Weiters, a far superior prospect at the same position didn't get even half of that just last year.

I'm underwhelmed with Posey. I'd stick with a stud SS or a stud college arm who can slide into the rotation behind Harang, Volquez, and Cueto.

The Reds are one spot short on the 40 because Merker was moved to the 60 day DL.
I don't think it's anything more than a coincidence though.

FSU's field is gravy for a left-handed hitter but Posey is right-handed and he raked everywhere. I don't think he has plus-plus power but he's not a mirage, either.

Still doesn't make him worth $12 million, though.

This is just another example of how MLB needs a pay scale for draft position.
