    2012 Undrafted Free Agents

Feel free to use this thread to talk about any undrafted free agents the Reds have signed or should consider signing. They just signed their first undrafted free agent, Ryan Fennell, who is the brother of Jason Fennell. Here are a few links on him.

It's actually been surprising to me that we've signed none before. I almost started this same thread a couple of days ago. I was trying recall though whether we had signed someone immediately following the draft this year, but apparently not.

    Re: 2012 Undrafted Free Agents

Reading the articles you put up were confusing. The local paper said he graduated from high school in June and would be playing ball at La Roche College. I thought it odd that an undrafted high school player would be signed, as it was, but then opened the other links and they show he pitched for Canisius and just graduated from there. My how the years fly by. Anyone else get that sense from the first article?

Just to be clear to those who are uninformed, this is the Reds' first undrafted free agent signing of 2012--not ever.

Not same family. Ryan from Pittsford NY. His dad Mike played in Yankee chain and was college teammate of Tom Browning at LeMoyne College.
Ryan's debut in Arizona was pretty good w/ O.OO era. He earned Fall instructional invite.

For those well versed in the Reds minor league system, was there just one undrafted free agent signed this year? Is that typical?

It's hardly typical. Usually, you'll see a handful of non-drafted free agents signed--3 to 5 or so. Since the draft was limited to 40 rounds, I thought we'd see more, but we saw less for some reason. I suspect a part of that was because college seniors were more desirable in the draft this year since they freed up more money in the bonus pool.

    Re: 2012 Undrafted Free Agents

They just did not have openings (or needs) this year. They released former undrafted free agent Brennan May, who was hitting .323 at the time with Billings. Undrafted free agent Drew Poulk was released in spring training despite a good year in 2011. Former undrafted free agent Spencer Dickinson was hitting .365 at Billings when he was promoted and hardly got on the field in Dayton.

Not sure I can put my finger on the reason but they have very few open spots on the rosters in the low minors at the moment.

They have some guys who got big money and must play yet are not playing well enough to move up so it creates a bit of a clog.

Next year might see even more of this type of thing. You wonder how they are going to find spots for all of those outfielders at Dayton/Bakersfield, especially with guys like Arias and Buckley moving to the outfield and behind them you have Winker, Gelalich, Amaral, Pigott, etc.

I feel for a guy like Kurtis Muller, who, when he got the one chance to play everyday at Dayton for a few weeks, was the best player on the team (.940 OPS). Then he went to Bakersfield and got stuck on the bench. For many players, tough to really show what they can do when they are only playing a couple days a week.

Arias and Buckley are moving to the OF? I hadn't heard that but it should be good for Arias, at least defensively.

A lot of holdovers from Billings and Goodyear and a steady stream of talent from the DSL?

I thought I read somewhere, maybe on this board, that the Reds were going to add another farm team next year. In the Northwest League? I am going to try to find that link if I can. I may have misread that.

There was talk that they wanted to do this but for whatever reason it did not happen. Limited number of available options.

Thanks. I thought I read something along those lines but could not google anything about it. Then I thought maybe I was going crazy.
