Could Rey Navarro outperform Zack Cozart?

Maybe he's just lost power for some reason. Or maybe it's simply that, just bad luck, he has only 2 homers this year, very low for him and pulling his power numbers down. Any thoughts on this?

I just took a quick look at his zone profile at Brooks Baseball and was shocked to see just how terrible he has been on dead red middle of the zone pitches. The strikezone can be split into 9 squares. The one directly in the middle, ideally, should be the best one to hit from. Last year Cozart had 7 home runs on pitches there. His IsoP was .484 at that part of the zone. This year? He doesn't have a single extra-base hit in that area of the strikezone on 31 balls put in play. That's really hard to even figure out.

.. while I doubt that he´ll be a great mlb player I do think that he has a place in this league (as soon as he gets expensive he´ll be a utility player) ...

Why would a major league average SS be relegated to the bench because you are paying him more money.

I thought the thread title could have been "Could R. Santiago outperform Zach Cozart?"

Although Santiago is years past his prime as a defensive SS, his current slash line trumps that of Cozart.

Cozart .227/ .279/ .296/ .574

If it's offense that they need, then Santiago at SS and Lutz in LF (along with Pena at 1B) would add some lefty offense

He started off with a good 11 games, but he was never really expected to hit for an average or get on base. He had solid pop, and good pop for a shortstop. He is the catcher of shortstops. Has some power, can field but can't hit.

I believe you meant "solid pop-up" and "good pop-up".

i would like to see him come up, but it seems Cozart has a FREE pass to fail on offense with ZERO accountability for it. If i could afford it, i would buy Cozart the device from a website they advertise sometimes during games http://www.speedhitter.com/.. then maybe would care his offense is killing the team when they need it and BRUCE TOO!!!!

DIDI should be a Red, dumb move to rely on Cozart. He can't hit, period. Gregorius would be a great for this team. I would take the Choo trade back right now if possible. Our lineup with all the injuries would be still somewhat dangerous.

Cozart's 52 wRC+ places him dead last, easily, in MLB among qualified hitters. Only one other hitter is below 60. Only 3 others are below 70. Only 8 others are below 80. He's been 19.1 runs below average offensive.

The crazy part is that he's been 16.5 runs above average defense, making him the 3rd most productive defensive player in baseball. He's basically Brendan Ryan.

I have no idea about Rey Navarro and what he's capable of doing, but I know the bar isn't very high.

Going into tonight the NL average OPS for the shortstop position was .695.

The Reds OPS for the shortstop position was .564, last in the league.

I don't think you can have such a huge gap between your hitters and league average at any of the 8 positions. Cozart's offense was never that good, but really has taken a dive this season.

Cozart is a fascinating creature. He's beyond terrible at the plate, but still is 1 win player according to fWAR.
