Just think how well Boyles is going to perform when he stops throwing with the wrong arm.
Just think how well Boyles is going to perform when he stops throwing with the wrong arm.
Thursday, June 27: Sal Romano, Dayton . . . 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K. After a protracted rough patch, the formidable New Englander has apparently gotten his groove back. It's the second straight start in which he's copped this coveted honor.
Also notable . . .
Logan Uxa: The recent 32nd-rounder (Arkansas State), playing first base and batting cleanup for the AZLs, went 2 for 3 with a pair of triples, a walk, and 3 RBIs.
Kevin Franklin: 1-3, 2B, BB, R: First mention here for the second-round pick and recent signee.
Ronald Bueno: 3-4, BB, 3 R, SB. A Bueno day.
Jakub Izold: 3.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. The Slovakian lefty comes up with a performance to build on.
Zach Vincej: 3-5, R, RBI. The slick shortstop is 14 for 25 in his last six games. Now batting .280. Not sure why he was replaced in the ninth.
Ben Klimesh: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K in the 9th inning.
Donald Lutz: 2-3.
Chad Reineke: 8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. ERA sits at 3.12. Underrated perhaps, but very productive for the Bats.
Denis Phipps: 2-4, 2B, R, 3 RBI, SB.
Kyle Waldrop: 2-4, 2B, HR.
Juan Silva: 1-3, HR, 2 BB, 3 RBI.
Steve Selsky: 2-4, HR.
Pat Doyle: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, Sv.
Humberto Valor: 2-3, 2B, BB, 2 RBI for the Billings shortstop.

Friday, June 28: Devin Lohman, Pensacola . . . 2-3, HR (5), BB, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 SB (9). Nice job of leading off for the Wahoos' shortstop. Listening briefly to one of the games the other night, it sounded, also, like the announcer is a fan of Lohman's defense.
Also notable . . .
Josh Smith: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. ERA 3.50.
Trevor Bell: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Sv. The Pensacola bullpen was crashing when Bell arrived to save the day. The veteran is now unscored upon in 10.1 IP.
Marquez Smith: 2-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI. He can hit in Double-A, too.
Donald Lutz: 2-4, R, RBI.
Phil Ervin: 2-3, 3B, BB. Batting .414. Looking good.
Layne Somsen: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K. The 22nd-rounder (South Dakota State) provided Billings with solid long relief.
Daniel Pigott: 1-4, HR, BB, 2 RBI. The outfielder is hitting a quiet .321 for Dayton.
Brent Peterson: 2-3, BB, R.
Ismael Guillon: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K. Progress continues.
Henry Rodriguez: 2-4, HR, 3 RBI.
Zach Duke: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. Has given up only 2 hits in 7 IP for Louisville. Still left-handed.
Michael Dennhardt: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 4 K. Keyed Bakersfield's shutout win.
Chris Berset: The catcher was a perfect 2-2 with 2 BB.
Juan Silverio: 2-5, 2B, R.
Kyle Waldrop: 1-2, 2 BB, R, RBI, SB. Different kind of night for the young slugger.
Kyle Lotzkar: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K. He's all over the place these days. Hard to get a handle on.
Kevin Franklin: 1-2, 2B, 2 RBI, R. The second-rounder left the game after that. Anybody?
Aristides Aquino: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI.
Miguel Mendez (DSL Reds): 3-4, BB, RBI. Second baseman is hitting .391.
Raynar Guerrero: 3-4, 2B, R. First baseman is hitting .381.
Diohanky Mejia: 2-2, BB, R.

Saturday, June 29: Chris Berset, Bakersfield . . . 3-3, HR, 2 BB, 4 R. Over the past two games, the supposedly light-hitting catcher (he does walk a lot) has reached base in all 9 of his at-bats.
Also notable . . .
Juan Silverio: 4-5, 2 2B, 4 RBI in Bakersfield's big offensive night.
Juan Silva: 2-4, HR, 2 BB, 3 RBI.
Felix Perez: 2-3, BB, R.
Yorman Rodriguez: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI. His hitting streak was snapped the night before.
Tucker Barnhart: 2-3, BB.
Avain Rachal: 2-3, BB.
Taylor Terrasas: 2-4, 2B, R.
Francis Guerrero (DSL Reds): 2-4, 2B, SB for the 18-year-old catcher.
Jose De Sousa: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K. A 21-year-old lefty.
Luis Gonzalez: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K. Another DSL lefthander.
Francis Ancona (Rojos): 3-5, 3B, 3 RBI. Second baseman is batting .349.

Sunday, June 30: Ben Lively, Billings . . . 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K. The 4th-rounder (Central Florida) worked out of the starter's role, his innings restricted. In two starts, he has fanned 13 in six innings, with two walks, and not allowed a run. He's 6-foot-4, 21 years old, and looking forward to pitching in his hometown of Pensacola.
Also notable . . .
Mike Hessman: 3-4, HR (17), 3 RBI. Can't believe I missed his 400th career home run last week. I'd been tracking that. This was #401, including the 14 he has hit in the bigs.
Pedro Villarreal: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K in the Bats' 4-2 win.
Jesse Winker: 3-5, 2 2B, BB, 2 RBI, R over both games of Dayton's doubleheader. Seems to be out of his funk now.
Joyce Hernandez (DSL Reds): 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K. The 20-year-old Venezuelan pitched last year in the DSL, but not like this.
Kevin Franklin: 2-4, 2B, BB. The second-round third baseman is off to a nice start for the AZL Reds.
Mike Saunders: 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K in his first start for Dayton.
Drew Cisco: 5.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K.
Junior Arias: 2-4, 2B, SB (38).
Jake Johnson: 3.1, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. Best numbers he's put up in quite a while. He's one of those guys, like Lotzkar, for whom I'll continue to hold out hope.
Juan Silverio: 2-4, 2B.
Kyle Waldrop: 2-4, 2B.
Corey Wimberly: 3-6, SB, R.
Donald Lutz: 1-3, 2 BB, RBI.
Aristides Aquino (AZL): 3-5, 3B, 3 RBI, 2 R for the right fielder.
Kevin Garcia: 2-4, 2 2B for the center fielder.
Hector Vargas (DSL): 2-5, RBI.
Henderson Peralta: 3-5.

Monday, July 1: Greg Reynolds, Louisville . . . 6.1 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K. Not the big guy's most glittering performance, but then, there really weren't any of those on this night. At any rate, it was Reynolds' typical M.O.--not stingy with the hits, but very strong on the bottom line. Meanwhile, his strikeouts seem to be picking up; he's now fanned 22 in his last 22.1 IP. The victory put the former first-rounder (No. 2 overall) at 10-0 on the season. Bravo.
Also notable . . .
Emmanuel Burriss: 3-4, 2B, R.
Mike Hessman: 2-4, HR #18, BB. Keep thinking that right-handed bat might somehow be useful at GABP.
Denis Phipps: 1-3, 2B, 2 BB, R.
Zach Duke: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. His 0.00 ERA now covers 8.2 IP.
Daniel Paula: 2-4, 2B as Billings' DH and cleanup hitter. Now batting .391.
Ronald Bueno: 1-2, R, SB.
Pedro Diaz: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. The demotion has apparently done him some good.
Werleen Taveras: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. The 22-year-old is unscored upon in 7.1 IP.
Beau Amaral: 2-5, 2B, 2 R in Dayton's extra-inning loss.
Junior Arias: 2-5, SB #40. I'm not going to go back and count, but my guess is that Arias has made more appearances on this list than anyone else.
Ryan Dennick: 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 0 K. That wouldn't get him noted here, but he added a 2-run single that made the difference--and made him the winner--in Pensacola's rain-shortened, one-run victory.
Travis Mattair: 1-1, BB, RBI.
Ryan Wright: 2-5, HR.
Juan Duran: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI.
Yovan Gonzalez: 3-4, RBI.
Juan Perez: 2-4, R, 2 SB.
Jose Fernandez (AZL): 3-4.
Manuel Aybar: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K.
Tyler Mahle: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Second nice relief outing for the overslot 7th-rounder. The righthander was drafted out of a California high school.
Tuesday, July 2: Avain Rachal, Billings . . . 3-6, 3B, HR, BB, 2 RBI, SB (over both games of doubleheader sweep). The 19-year-old second baseman is now batting .333 with a .429 OBP. Only 10 games, however.
Also notable . . .
Phil Ervin: 3-4, R, RBI, 2 SB in game one.
Austin (used to be Michael) Salter: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K. The 6-4 righthander started the Mustangs' second game.
Luke Moran: 5.1 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K.
Austin (was never Michael) Muehring: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, Sv.
Jonathan Reynoso: 2-4, 2B, 2 R, SB in game one.
Ronald Bueno: 1-2, 2B, 2 RBI in game two.
Nick Benedetto: 1-3, 3B.
Denis Phipps: 1-3, HR.
Chad Reineke: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K. Yeoman.
Devin Lohman: 1-3, HR.
Daniel Renken: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K.
Jeremy Kivel (AZL): 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K.
Francis Azcona (DSL Rojos): 1-2, BB. Second baseman is batting .352.
Thanks for posting these mace. I read them all, I know it's a lot of work, but I appreciate the read.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob
Nov. 13, 2007: One of the greatest days in Reds history: John Allen gets the boot!
Thanks, Red. I do wonder sometimes if anybody's interested in these, but a few like you have been kind enough to offer periodic encouragement. The work involved is not significant, however. I need a little warmup when I sit down at my desk in the morning, and this suffices.
As far as I'm concerned, these have been the highlight of RedsZone this season, mace. I have learned much about the minor league system from the reports.
While the box scores tell you about the game, these reports really focus the reader on particular prospects. Some of them, like today's guy, I frankly hadn't focused on previously.
So you do deserve much credit. And thanks.
Thanks, kc. I've appreciated your support.
One program note. I haven't included the team affiliations in the lists of notables, mostly because I didn't want to clutter it and preferred to focus on the players. I have noted it, generally, when it's a DSL or sometimes AZL player, because those guys are come-latelies and might not be recognized. My question is: Would you all prefer if I included the team on all the notables, so you can get a better grasp of them?
Mace, I read them everyday - thanks for doing this!
"I came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum... and I'm all out of bubble gum."
- - Rowdy Roddy Piper
"It takes a big man to admit when he is wrong. I am not a big man"
- - Fletch
It's a great thread.
I echo KC. This is the best part of Redszone this summer. Thank Mace.
