    Mesoraco and Gil to AAA

According to today's Bats game notes today,

    Juan Francisco was activated
Chris Denove was sent to AA
Devin Mesoraco was assgined to AAA
Jason Isringhausen was put on the the DL
Jerry Gil was promoted to AAA.

The first four moves were expected, and should benefit the Bats tremendously in their quest for the division/wild card. So it is hard to complain about the Reds only using the Bats for player development, and not helping them win in a pennant race. But the Gil promotion does not help the Bats win, or help develop a player that could conceivably help the Reds.

Gil has walked 53 batters in 56 AAA innings. In his last 10 games he has walked 13 in 13.1 innings. His other peripherals are decent, and he must have had some luck, as his ERA is 4.66, but he clearly has yet to gain anything close to AA level control, and this fault makes him nowhere near being able to help the Bats, let alone the Reds in the near future. Guys like Joe Krebs and Lee Tabor - or pretty much anyone in the Carolina bullpen - would help the Bats more, and could even help the Reds soon. Could someone explain why Gil was brought up instead of Krebs?

Maybe the Reds want Gil to work with Ted Power on something that the other guys don't need to work on.

A lot of these moves arent always performance based.

I think a lot of the reason Mes got promoted was not because of how he has been hitting but because they wanted him to be around Power, Sweet, MLB relievers, and Corky Miller.

+1. His bat is there. Working with Corky and calling a game with former and future ML pitchers will help him moving foward. Conceivably if he does ok for the last 2 weeks and playoffs in AAA and does well in the AFL he might be given an opportunity to make the OD roster.

In the case of Gil, it could be that they wanted to see him against better competition in order to make a determination on his 40-man status at the end of the year. It doesn't seem like he'd be a strong candidate for the 40, but they might feel that they at least owe him a look.

If Gil has the kind of arm he's been reputed to have, it makes sense for the Reds to continue to challenge him and get him with more coaches, as GIDP says.

Gil is the converted infielder right?
"He looked like a surfer kid from SoCal," manager Dusty Baker says. "He didn't say much, but you could tell he was cool."

Correct. A former SS who supposedly gets it up to around 98.

Or, it could be that they've decided Gil is expendable and he's just a filler arm for the back of the bullpen. Isringhausen only threw 5.2 innings in three weeks, it's not like his DL trip is creating a huge opening for someone.

I didn't see him there this past week, but he was 91-93 on the scout guns.

Yea, I dunno about Gil hitting 98. The hardest throwers for the Mudcats this year have been Valiquette and I believe Medina who throw 96. Gil may be around 94

Gotta toss Boxberger in there. He was hitting 96 last week for the Mudcats. Valiquette is the hardest thrower this year though, hitting 100.

One of these days, Phillippe Valiquette is going to find some control.

What radar are you going off of with the 100?
