I'm finding it difficult to wrap my head around the idea of Mariano Rivera closing out his career at Minute Maid Park.
There is no such thing as a pitching prospect.

Crazy in Texas....with 2 outs in 6th a walk and a single then Ron Washington PR Adam Rosales on 1st....next guy hits a double and Rangers take the lead.
And the Halos equalize the next time up in the 7th. Good game. Now 5-5. Slugfest with the Rangers clearly much more desperate. Guessing that either helps them...or hurts them. We'll know soon enough.
Somehow I think Cleveland is much more likely to make it to and through an LDS than Texas but who knows?

Exciting finishes in Texas and Minneapolis.
Indians hang on to win 6-5 despite going into the 9th up 6-1.
Rangers walkoff bottom 9 with a Profar HR to RF and a 6-5 win there.
So no change in the AL Wildcard standings other than the fourth-to-last opportunity for the Rangers to close the 1-game gap passing them by.
The smart money is probably on Cleveland to square up with the Rays on Tuesday while we play Pittsburgh. The Indians hold the 1-game lead and, as important, they have the Twins to finish up this weekend while the Rangers will continue battling Trout, Trumbo, Pujols, Hamilton, etc.

Wait Mariano Rivera is retiring!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?! Why hasn't anybody said anything????? Is he quitting because they had him come in to pitch the 8th and that is not allowed by the closers' union?

Mariano Rivera:
ERA+ is #1 all-time (2.05)
WHIP is #3 all-time (1.00)
K/B ratio is #4 all-time (4.10)
I don't even care about the saves.

Maudlin, pompous, and overbearing - the Yankee way.
A tribute to Rivera's basic dignity that he hasn't looked like a jackass through this entire season-long encomium.

That was, by far, the classiest exit I've ever witnessed. Having Pettitte and Jeter come and take him out was a genius move.
I don't care if you like the closers role or not, the save stat or not, Rivera would've been a HoF'er in any pitching role.
