I like the idea of mixing offense and defense to come up with a number, but I think way too much weight is placed on UZR.

UZR says that Soriano has been a solid in LF the last few years. Really?

I think, right now, I'd take him in RF over just about anyone.

Votto was the MVP at the All Star break last season and if it weren't for a media uproar, and the last vote, he wouldn't of made it. I don't like Bruce's chances. This is Cincinnati, not New York.

MLB network did their top RF's in the game segment this past off-season and I thought it was pretty pathetic that he was not top 10. He's EASILY top 5 and, when you consider his age, I can't think of anyone I'd take over him if I was starting a franchise

True, but Jay may be more recognizable to the average fan than Votto was a year ago. He certainly got a lot more fanfare and ESPN time when he arrived in the bigs.

He also might have an easier time garnering votes as an OF as opposed to 1B where Votto had 5-6 all star caliber players to compete with.

I think it's going to take a heck of a vote from us hometown fans to get him there.

He should be right on the edge depending on how many outfielders they take.

    Definitely ahead of Bruce:

Kemp, Braun, Berkman, Holiday, Pence (only logical Astros All-Star, but has had a great season)

Right in the middle of: CarGo, Prado, Beltran, McCutchen, Stubbs.

The way he is trending, him and Cargo should leave that group in the dust and jump into the upper tier. The only problem is going to be guys like Victorino, and maybe Ethier and Corey Hart potentially taking spots due to their teams stuffing the ballots. Especially Mil and Philly with the crowds they draw.
"Today was the byproduct of us thinking we can come back from anything." - Joey Votto after blowing a 10-1 lead and holding on for the 12-11 win on 8/25/2010.

OK, here's a problem I have with WAR. Jay is a 1.2 and Choo is 1.6.

    C'mon, seriously?

    Choo: .250/.332/.393/.724 (5 HR, 22 RBI)
    Bruce: .271/.341/.512/.853 (11 HR, 27 RBI)

So Choo is that much better in RF? I've read on here that UZR can only really measured accurately over a long time period (say 3 years). So it seems to me that UZR kind of messes up WAR when looking at it within a season. Am I missing something here?
Less than two months of UZR is pretty meaningless. WAR is a stat much better used on a year to year basis than just 1/4 of the way through the year.

Jay Bruce and Ryan Braun are now tied for first in the NL with 12 home runs. Which is amazing because it was already determined that Bruce is NOT Ryan Braun.

Nearing a .900 OPS and on pace to top 40 homers and 100 RBI.

Just think how good he'll be if he starts hitting.

    That's the point.

He was always going to start hitting.

The thread was mindless when it started, and it's just been proven to be more mindless as time has proven what it always does in baseball. That players will invariably find their level over a larger sample size.

Consider he's less than a week older than Yonder Alonso.

He hit .230 in April. He was not going to continue that pace.

See, by saying that, it makes it sound like it will be acceptable to call him Ben Greive II again if he hits .230 in say, August. Your whole premie was off, would you agree?

Being named as an All-Star doesn't pack near as much weight as it used to.

Why? Because too many idiots get to vote as many times as they can vote.

I've had my doubts about WAR even on a yearly basis ever since Nyjer Morgan was deemed to have had a better season than Ryan Braun a few year ago. Comical.

And youve mostly been wrong about WAR.
