Yeah, he looked odd coming off the field, removing his hat like that. Maybe he needs a new stri....um, girlfriend.

If he's still having these issues in a week, then it's time to conclude there's something more going on. But off the basis of two appearances, sometimes guys simply go through periods where they don't have their full strength. That's not uncommon at all.
Examples of this? 5 mph is a big difference on a fastball

    Velocity isn't everything.

Common sense is knowing your personnel and knowing what, if anything, is wrong and what their breaking point is.

Dusty is far more equipped to knowing what is wrong with Chapman and when to pull him than fans sitting in front of a computer reading radar graphics.

might just be freaking home sick...left his entire family. Might be something wrong at home. I'm sure the government was not crazy about him defecting.

That would still not explain the loss in velocity

The thing that really worries you about Chapman is this is three times in a row the velocity is down. If it was one night you could maybe say he couldn't get loose in the cooler weather or something like that.

I've played and thrown enough fastballs to know, I've also coached enough high school ball to know

I would just give Aroldis some low pressure outings and let him get his mechanics back. Some pitchers need more regular use or they get things fouled up.

You're cherry-picking pitches. The other night, he averaged 96. It wasn't a 5 MPH difference, it was a 2 MPH difference.

As far as examples, there are decades worth of baseball at one's disposal to know that pitchers go through periods where their velocity will fluctuate. It's not a static thing. It's not common for it to drop suddenly over the course of a large sample, but over a few games... that's not really uncommon.

Why aren't you managing the Reds then? By all means... you're a high school coach, I think Dusty should listen.

Wile we're debating Chapman's velocity, Hanigan just had a heck of an at bat.
