Computer - or monitor - question

This is not a big thing but I have taken a lot of pictures and I want to see how they will look in black and white. I could look at them individually in Windows Photo Gallery but I'd have to fix every one and put it back to it's regular color again. I've tried to adjust my monitor but when I set the Red, Green, and Blue to 0 I get a dark screen. I just want to select the ones I think look best in BxW without having to change the files. Any suggestions?

"Gimp" is a nice, free, Paintbox-ish program you can download. Once you have it, you can open a picture, set the color saturation slider to zero, and it will preview it without changing anything. You can also do any number of other tweaks.

Do I have to do that with every picture over and over again or will it default each view to bxw?

OK. I found something called Picasa that did the trick.
