Re: 2018 Reds Draft Picks and Signing info

Checking 11th Rounder Noah Davis' Instagram, he wrote on Draft Day.....

"A few kids’ childhood dreams turned to reality today. Thank you to the @reds organization for the opportunity of a lifetime". He was wearing a Reds Cap in the photo.

That sounds like a guy that will sign, but I'm not changing his status yet.

And apparently 38th pick Adam Jacques is the son of a Reds scout. So they better sign that kid......

Clubs draft sons of scouts all the time in the 30-40 round range, often as a thank you, they typically don't sign.

The Reds signed a Free Agent out of Ramapo College which is where our #34 pick is from, but no word on him yet

It's my understanding that rarely do baseball players get full rides. It's almost always partial scholarships

No reason to believe India, Byrne, Starr, Marquardt, Curtis, Demurias, Lopez, or Heitler fail to sign. That would make 30; which is about the average number teams sign in the draft (usually a little over 900 of the 1,200+ selections).

I don't see the money for the other 11 guys (all of whom I mentioned right after the draft as unlikely to sign), but who knows 1 or 2 of them might sign for 125K$.
In looking at the signings thread of the past couple of yrs, it seems that 30 is a little high. It's usually in the mid 20s. Of course I realize it's possible that our list might not have been fully updated

If they sign a pro contract, can't they negotiate to get the team to pay for their school if they fail to make it?
I think the only reason to go to college is if you think your draftstock will raise tremendously. It is a big risk otherwise (injuries, or the player may simply not be as good as he thinks he is).
125k plus a scholarship from MLB is a pretty sweet deal, unless you think you can go in the first round in a few years with some college play.

Note, I don't want to start the annual debate about the value of a college education, that was not my intent
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

Re: 2018 Reds Draft Picks and Signing info

There are over 1,600 college baseball programs with approximately 50,000 college baseball players. College baseball is categorized as an equivalency sport which means that scholarships can be divided up and given to multiple players. Therefore, full-ride athletic scholarships are rare in college baseball and some players are either on partial athletic scholarships or do not receive athletic scholarship money. In addition, some programs are not “fully funded”, meaning the athletic department at the school does not give them the full allotment of scholarships allowed at their level.

    NCAA Division I Baseball Scholarships
There are approximately 299 NCAA Division I baseball programs with each team being allowed to offer a maximum of (11.7) scholarships. Under NCAA rules, these 11.7 scholarships can be divided between a maximum of 27 players, with all players on athletic scholarship having to receive a minimum of a 25% scholarship. To compete for athletic scholarships at the Division I level, you will want to have video and an online presence to be evaluated and identified. Division I programs start recruiting very early in the process and verbal offers and commitments are made earlier at the Division I level than any other level.

I know we've bandied about on here that they would have to - it was just nice to see someone in the "industry" acknowledge that. Maybe that's just because it's the Reds and I don't trust them...?

It pretty much happens every year but cant blame anyone for not trusting this front office. One thing though they have done well lately is draft and signing so I dont worry too much personally.
