    July 2014 trade deadline thread

Use this thread exclusively for posting news, rumors, discussion, snark, panda gif's, and woe-is us statements or just a catch all for things that don't seem big enough for their own thread.

Two things of note from Jayson Stark to start of this thread
    http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/11...ing-jon-lester
    • The starting-pitcher market is a wasteland. With the Rays unlikely to move David Price, with the Phillies' inflated asking price for Cole Hamels and with Cliff Lee's elbow and money issues, there's no available starter even close to Lester in either stature or impact.
So the Red Sox have contacted every contender that's looking for a starter and let all of them know Lester could be available for a two- or three-player package fronted by at least one upper-echelon prospect. So just take all those Price-to-the-Dodgers/Mariners/Cardinals rumors and substitute Lester's name, and you'll be right on target. But while the asking price remains monstrous, it isn't quite what the Rays were asking for Price, either. "In the end, it has to be less," one rival executive said, "just because he's a free agent, and the other guy [Price] is not."
    Reds are reassessing
Sources say the Phillies are actually having more difficulty trading Byrd than they had anticipated. The Royals appear to have backed off, at least in part because he's under contract for $8 million next year and could want his $8 million option for 2016 picked up before he'd approve a deal. And the Reds, another team with interest, are reassessing their situation after losing eight of nine since the All-Star break.
Oh and Jeff Francis has been DFA'd by the Yankees.

A’s Designate Kenny Wilson For Assignment

By Steve Adams [July 28, 2014 at 4:35pm CDT]

The A’s have designated outfielder Kenny Wilson for assignment, reports John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle (Twitter link). The move creates room for speedster Billy Burns, who will be recalled to replace Craig Gentry. Gentry has suffered a non-displaced fracture in his hand.

Wilson has been with the Blue Jays (twice), Twins and A’s this season, posting a combined .218/.295/.303 batting line between Double-A and Triple-A with those three organizations. He’s said to be a solid defender in center field, but his bat has taken a step back after a solid 2013 campaign in which he batted .270/.349/.386. Despite his meager on-base percentage in 2014, Wilson has swiped 24 bases. The fleet-footed 24-year-old has racked up 40 or more steals in three separate seasons.

Are we in on Pablo Sandoval?

The Reds FO is failing miserably. We have 3 players who's value will NEVER be higher. Cueto, Simon and Broxton. We could extend our window, shed payroll and get young cost controlled prospects in return without punting the 2015 season. Its amazing. We could sign Yasmani Tomas. Think of the package of prospects we could get in return for those 3 and we'd still have a VERY competitive team next year. As far as now, I would call up Felix Perez, Soto and Navarro and play them until Votto and BP get back.

Hamilton, Navarro, Frazier, Mesoraco, Bruce, Soto, F Perez, Cozart

Are you a fly on the wall in Walt's office? How do you know what the Reds FO is doing right now? They may be offering deals left and right and have been turned down every single time.

Yep - or they could be offering those guys JMO mentions and getting back offers of C grade prospects, deals that don't make sense.
99% of all numbers only tell 33% of the story so when looking at the numbers remember that numbers is plural...

Sounds like Lester's price is really high for a guy who'll basically make roughly ten starts and then become a free agent.

It's the playoff starts too, and of most importance.

Then they have no feel for the market - even worse than doing nothing is not knowing the market values and adjusting and still doing the best thing for your plan.

The Reds have been inactive in trades for about 19-20 months in my view. (December 2012 to almost August 2014.) Only relatively minor deals in that time.

Is the notion that nobody ever offers them a fair trade?

If so, why? Is the world picking on the Cincinnati Reds? Other teams are making deals.

If you can never find a fair deal, the first place to look is inward.
