Fultz is a reasonable Plan B for a LOOGY, although he's one of those veterans who probably has an out clause in his contract should an opportunity arise. So if he doesn't win a job (probably won't, barring injury), it'd be a surprise if he lasted the entire season in AAA.

I like Bankston as a darkhorse breakout/late-bloomer candidate. Although it means Dorn may not get the first look at AAA, there should be enough ABs to go around.

Nix is basically another Corey Patterson with more power and less speed. He can't really hit major-league pitching, but he could probably do the DeWayne Wise thing and fill a roster spot when it's required.

The thing with Fultz is that his fastball lost close to 5 MPH soon after signing a multi-million dollar contract with the Indians, and ever since then, he has been way too hittable. If he figures out how to regain that velocity, he could be great insurance for a bullpen injury.

Bobby Livingston signed with the Orioles.

    Ryan Jorgensen made him expendable.

Re: Minor League FA Signings- 2008-09 Offseason

Baez, 27 in August, has spent nearly his entire career in the Cubs system after being selected in the 42th round in 2000 out of Laredo CC (by way of Puerto Rico). Working almost exclusively out of the bullpen, the righthander posted a 3.38 ERA in the Midwest League at 21 and a 3.55 in the Florida State League at 22, but struggled in the Southern League at 23 (4.68 ERA, poor ratios). He set that right in 2006 with a second stint (2.43, 66.2 IP, much better ratios) but missed most of 2007 due to injuries. When he wasn't hurt, he was getting mauled at AAA Iowa (8.84 ERA). In 2008 he tried to work his way back through the independent route, posting a 6.06 ERA in 19 games with Camden in the Atlantic League.

Nothing about Baez stands out in particular- he's got pretty average ratios all the way around and moved at a fairly average pace through the minors. Perhaps the Reds are betting that he returns from Tommy John surgery with increased velocity or something.

Nice to have Peterson, now 30, back in the system after he left for a four-team tour of minor-league free agency after the 2005 season. Unfortunately for him, he hasn't had a whole ton of success since leaving the Reds after they snowed him at AA Chattanooga for almost three entire seasons. In 2006 he hit .329/.369/.481 in 26 games with AA Corpus Christi (Astros) and .263/.306/.456 in 36 games with AAA Toledo (Detroit). Moving to the Pittsburgh system for 2007, he batted .272/.344/.372 with AA Altoona in 83 games. Without a contract to begin 2008, Brian lashed twelve hits in thirty trips for independent Bridgeport in the Atlantic League before he was snapped up by Baltimore and sent back to... Double-A. He batted .243/.311/.328 in 51 games.

The majority of veteran minor-league catchers are pretty good with the glove but bat-impaired, and I think Peterson, who has a career .271/.344/.388 pro line with some very solid years in there (.300/.361/.444 in Chatt in 2004, .270/.323/.411 the next year, etc.), has gotten overlooked a little for his decent hitting skills. And if he wasn't at least decent with the glove, too, he would be unemployed or moved to another position by now.

Brian may start off backing up Craig Tatum in AAA in 2009, since Alvin Colina is back on the free-agent market and Ryan Hanigan seems to have earned the spot with the big club backing up Ramon Hernandez. It's also vaguely possible that Tatum and Hanigan could swap spots depending on how things shake out in camp, but that's an off-chance.

I believe the Reds could have nine catchers headed for AA or higher:
    Ramon Hernandez
    Ryan Hanigan
    Wilkin Castillo
    Craig Tatum
    Ryan Jorgensen
    Eddy Rodriguez
    Chris Kroski
    Brian Peterson
    Chris Denove

3 per team? Sounds about right.....
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Re: Minor League FA Signings- 2008-09 Offseason

We already know that the Reds signed Jonny Gomes, and per Baseball America, the other transaction was that the Reds released Jon Adkins, who the Reds re-signed just a few months ago. The Reds still have about 18 pitchers fighting for a spot in AAA which will likely lead to some deserving guys being released or going to AA.

Anyway, here's the news in ex-Reds:
Alvin Colina signed with the Atlanta Braves.
Kirk Saarloos signed with the Cleveland Indians.
Angel Cabrera was released by the Colorado Rockies.
Jason Standridge was signed by the Florida Marlins.
Dan Denham was signed by the Los Angeles Angels.

I want to see Angel Cabrera back with the Reds for 2009

He was just starting to come into his own when he got mixed up with all of that crap involving the brawl
