After walking and lining out in his first two plate appearances, Pete Rose led off the sixth inning with a single to RF off Niekro, tying Wee Willie Keeler's NL-record 44-game hitting streak with the old Baltimore Orioles of the NL in 1897. Rose was 1-for-4 with a walk on the evening. Over the 44-game hitting streak, Rose had raised his batting average from .267 to .316, and his OPS from .734 to .795.
