    2012 Bats Look Totally Different

    Subtractions:

    Daryl Thompson - twins
    Matt Maloney - twins
    Jared Burton - twins
    Yasmani Grandal - pads
    Brad Boxberger - pads
    Yonder Alonso - pads
    Devin Mesoraco - reds
    Jeremy Hermida - pads
    Fred Lewis - fa
    Juan Francisco - reds
    Zach Cozart - reds

    Additions:
    Soto
    ???help me here

Struck me today - the Bats are essentially a brand new team. Brand new manager too. Pretty startling, really. Last year was the all-stagnation team, but that's all been swept away. Who can take a stab at filling out the roster in AAA for the forum?

    Yep.

I'll say this, the room for swift promotions for the young batch in A and A+ has opened up. Perhaps we'll see Drew Hayes in AAA by years' end, for example.

That's going to look very close to opening day. They could release a player or two and they don't have a second catcher. I see Jones and Rhinehart as the big possibilities to start 2012 back in Double-A.

The Bats have certainly taken a hit this offseason. But as a true fan of the minor league game you always know that when a team is built around young talent it isn't going to last. The list of players previously posted is pretty accurate to what is currently in the system. I think some minor league free agent signings are going to take place between now and spring training. Catcher is a particular need. Corky is a badass, but he isn't catching 140 games either. They had James Skelton up from AA for the last couple of weeks in 2011 but he looked to be a poor man's version of Wilken Castillo... slightly built, played other positions, didn't hit for squat. Not sure if he is an option or not, but it would be dandy if they'd add a Catcher and a big bat to play 3b to go along with Soto at 1B. Costanzo is probably the 3b if they don't add someone but he's pretty limited offensively. Also, unless they give Frazier a spot on the 25 man roster he's a pretty good bet to be in Louisville as well. Another pitcher or two would also be nice. Travis Wood might very well start the year with the Bats and I'm interested to see if Ted Power can work some magic with Andrew Brackman. That would be a real feather in his cap if he could turn Brackman back into a prospect.

So, what does the rotation look like? How is the bullpen set up? What positions are these guys playing?

My thoughts as well. In my opinion, Power was the most valuable guy in the dugout the last couple of years. It would be a real bonus if he could get Brackman going in the right direction.

Looks like a prime spot for some minor league free agents or guys trying to bounce back to sign on. Should be an interesting team this year. In the past, the hitting was the fun part to check on. Now I am more interested in seeing how the pitching goes in Louisville.

I think the guy to watch will be Soto. He will be the guy that I think should be the most important follow unless Chapman winds up there.
