Last Night's Game Was the Longest Played in Cincy Since...

I haven't heard much talk about the length of last night's game (5 hours, 22 minutes).

It was the longest game in Great American Ball Park history. No game in Riverfront Stadium ever lasted that long.

It was the longest game played in Cincinnati since September 1, 1967 when the Reds lost to the San Francisco Giants 1-0 in 21 innings which lasted 5:40.

It was the second longest game ever played in Cincinnati and the longest home game ever in which the Reds have won.

I got tired of hearing Thom casually complain how long the game was taking.

    I turned it off.

I came home at 5:00PM, started watching... it was over at 9:30 or so. It ate up my whole evening.

When the game ended the Cards were on the west coast in the 6th inning, the 2nd Monday night game was at halftime and I still hadn't done anything but watch the game.

I started watching when Chapman was pitching in the 10th, had followed on my mobile device just as they tied it up in the 7th while watching 9/11 programming. It sucked me in like an undertow.

I'm highlighting that one part because it jumps out the difference between the game then and the game now. They played a third more innings in just 20 minutes more than last night's game. That's extraordinary.

Thom is fast growing into a grouchy old man like his dad is at times, maybe worse. If he's tired of it, tell him to punch the clock and go home.

His power hitters should Sac Bunt regularly shtick is getting old.

FYI Tom, in the expansion era only ONE 1b (with a .450 slg% has more than 9 SACs in a season, in the same time only 15 OF's do, it hasn't been done since Crisp and Winn did it in 2005.

The fact is the Sac bunt is a weak hitters tool, not a power hitters.

It hasn't been since the 1930's... so deal with it, learn some history and shut your pie hole on the subject

Hooboy, here's the box score for that 9/1/1967 game against the Giants - 21 innings. Gaylord Perry pitched the first 16 innings and a reliever took the final five. The pitch count was not noted. Reds Pitcher Bob Lee walked Dick Groat for the winning run. Various Reds players were in for the entire game with 8 or 9 AB's.

a couple more 14 inning games, and Votto can qualify for the batting title

One thing I noticed was the Reds #4 and #5 hitters, Lee May and Tony Perez, were both lifted in that game. May was double switched out and Perez was lifted for a pinch runner.

    Redszone would have exploded!
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

    Amen.

I'm thrilled with mlb.com's ability to listen to the other sides radio broadcast so I don't have to hear how tough marty and company have it.

What the hell? That was the longest Reds game in Cincinnati in my lifetime (born in 1976) and I didn't even know it? Wow.

Where can I turn in my Reds Fan card? I'm ashamed I didn't know that.

Did Juan Castro pinch hit for either one?

I was very surprised when NONE of the Reds writers noted this fact.
