    Another Hypothetical.

I plan on asking a lot of these so, get used to it.

Reds obviously need catching help. Paul Bako.

Reds have two young guys who look like absolute studs in the rotation already in Volquez/Cueto and two excellent vets signed long-term in Harang/Arroyo.

The fact that we still have a very rich farm system is still germane.

    The question:

If you are the Reds GM, with all current circumstances being what they are, do you accept this trade offer from Tejas:

C/1B Jarrod Saltalamacchia for Homer Bailey?

I suggested this trade in a previous thread about Homer Bailey. I would absolutely pull the trigger on that deal in a second.

    Re: Another Hypothetical.

I just feel that catcher is the one position this team is lacking the most. Secondly, I believe Cueto and Volquez are the real deal and that Homer, if he even makes it to the majors, would not be a #1 or #2 pitcher.

Salty was a very highly rated prospect and still is.

I think our starting pitching is pretty much in line, and catcher is the final piece of the puzzle.

When KGJ leaves after this year, Bruce is another final piece to the puzzle.

3-0 in favor....I would have to cast a dissenting vote. I think Salty's future is at first and I think we'd be dealing Homer off at a time when his trade value is at its lowest. I'm all for strengthening our C situation but I'd rather do it by dealing off some B-level prospects for guys like Laird or Paulino or via FA.

I'm with you on this one. Not a huge fan of salty, and dont want to give up on Bailey yet. 97 MPH arms don't grow on trees.

I agree with BigLebowski and mound patrol. Absolutely not. Saltalamacchia lost the starting catching job in Texas because he is a mediocre fielder, and will most likely be moved to first.
The Reds do not need another bad defensive catcher (Valentin) or another firstbaseman. And Bailey is just 21.

The overall value of a young starting pitcher like Bailey should bring back more than just Salty. People on this board are too low on Bailey. He is going to be good I promise you that. May not be a #1 or #2, but he WILL be good for the Reds.

    Re: Another Hypothetical.

You guys seem to put too much emphasis on offense in the catching.Taken in hand a catcher batting near the Mendoza line is no good. However a catcher that can hit for average and plays solid defense adequate IMO.Like Dusty said about Bako when he said he calls a great game, and anything extra is a plus.

    Re: Another Hypothetical.

A good pitcher will bring you far more value than a good catcher. A year ago Bailey was a certified Ace in the making. Give him time, he's 21, if he gets his command down then we have one of the best starting five in the majors.

Think about that, Arroyo would be the #5 pitcher if Homer lived up to his hype. Bronson Arroyo, a #2/#3 on most teams.

    Re: Another Hypothetical.

Bailey is our best minor league pitching prospect. I say do not trade him for any catcher. We could probably trade 2 or 3 B prospects and get a decent catcher. Bailey did great in his first start in AAA, and combine that with his age 21, and I say we have to wait a while before we even consider getting rid of him. I just hate the fact that a lot of people have given up on Homer already. The Tigers gave up on John Smoltz and traded him to Atlanta for Doyle Alexander, and look how that turned out. I am not saying that Homer is as good as Smoltz, but we don't know how good he is right now. Lets give him some more AAA time and then see.

Wow...seems like opinions drastically changed after that 3rd post.

Very refreshing to see that not all Reds fans are down on HB.

No offense, but your username probably makes you unqualified to think straight on this issue of trading Bailey.

Seriously, your opinion is no better than mine regarding Bailey.

Last report I got is that the Reds are concerned about Homer's decreasing velocity on his fastball. They say he's only been reaching 91-92 on the radar gun lately.

    Re: Another Hypothetical.

Didn't Bako just drive in the winning runs the other night?

I agree on calling a game being the most important aspect for the C, and in that regard Bako fills in fine for Ross while he's out.

NEXT year is when we should start concerning ourselve with Catchers. Valentin's a FA, and Ross is in his option year (@$3.5M I believe)... I wouldn't be trading our (now) #1 SP prospect for a catcher/1b-man...

    PEACE

I think that in a year or two, one of these guys - Frazier, Dorn, Valaika, Cumberland, Stubbs - will be ready to replace Dunn. They won't hit as many home runs as Dunn, but they should have similar OPS. - 757690, July 22, 2008

Alonso will be playing 1B for the REDS and batting 4th one year from today. - Kingspoint, July 9, 2009
