Bronson Arroyo has been a 1.7 WAR player over the past few years.

WAR is a stat that separates (or attempts to based on ones viewpoint) you from your teammates. It puts (or again, tries to put) every player in the league on an even playing field so they can be compared.

You claim he is more valuable than 1.7 wins because the depth of the Reds pitching stinks, right? That would inflate the "worth" of all the Reds starters then in your eyes, no? I get that if Arroyo disappeared last year the Reds probably would have lost a few more games. But that is different than his WAR.

    I miss him already.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Loved him as a Reds player, but no way I'd pay that amount of money for Bronson. $$$$ in MLB be crazy!
Yes that was a very impressive infield single. I thought for a second it was leaving the yard. - texasdave 10/13/12

Happy for Bronson but a little sad to see him go. He's a good dude and valuable pitcher. I get why the Reds didn't sign him and agree that fiscally it made sense. But I'll miss him nonetheless.

Best of luck to him except when he pitches against the Reds.

I wonder how Bronson will get along with Gibson.

Makes sense but now that it's happened, I kinda regret it. When the story is written about how the Reds came back from the dead in the last decade, he will properly be assigned a major role. Thank you, Bronson.

This team will not miss him, especially at GABP. I don't have anything against him, but there are much better pitchers out there for this team including the ones already on the roster.
You can't use fWAR with him, because he's consistently outperformed his FIP. He's one of the few outliers. By RA/9 WAR he's at 6.1 over that span.

Which to be fair, factors in the superb defense he has had behind him.

Suprise me. How do the other 4 Reds starters over the past few years fare with your adjustment?

To supplement the post a couple back.

    Bronson Arroyo career xFIP 4.39.

    Bronson Arroyo career ERA 4.19.

I have no problem granting you that.

Leake's 2013 is overvalued, but I don't believe he's an outlier like Arroyo is. (And I'm sure you know this, but it's not MY adjustment, it's how BR calculates WAR. Don't want anyone to get the wrong idea)

I believe fWAR is based on FIP, not xFIP.

Here's the difference between Arroyo's ERA and FIP last year and then career:

    2013 ERA 3.79
    2013 FIP 4.49

    Career ERA 4.19
    Career FIP 4.54

You are correct. Also xFIP doesn't really suit a guy with 2000+ innings because it normalizes HR rate, and Arroyo's numbers don't need normalized. They've stabilized by this point.

It's late, so forgive the weak research.

But a commenter on FG (named RMR....hmmm) noted that the Reds staff in 2013 had an ERA .43 runs less than their FIP.

Time will tell. But let's see Arroyo in front of a non-elite defense.

Latos, Bailey and Chapman all had ERA higher than their FIP. The defense definitely helped the Reds pitching staff, but some pitchers have been able to take advantage of it better than others.

But I agree that Arroyo won't do as well in front of a mediocre defense.
