A foreign substance is a foreign substance whether it's done by accident or on purpose. A pitcher could just cut himself on his hand and could justify it by saying it was an accident. The rule is there so the pitcher doesn't get an advantage.

Disagree. Should a pitcher be allowed to sneeze into his hand and then pitch?

Not that it would be a likely to recur, but if allowed, why not just have a scab on the palm of your hand that you could 'rub up' and get some ooze flowing at gametime?

Fact is that the player is putting a foreign substance on the ball and that is not allowed

Can't imagine how exciting it must be for any pitcher to see Cozart on deck.

Well you could get a whole bunch of rosin and rub up the ball, should they get rid of the rosin bag

Nice patience at the plate so far from the Reds. 50 pitches for Smardzija. Choo K's looking.
