Division play and Augie Busch's insistence that he be in the same division as the Cubs (EAST though both are west of Cincinnati) created the world that we recall as being recent.
The Reds, from a Cardinals fan perspective, did not become a heated rival with the Cardinals until 2010ish. Prior to that, it's always been a team that we just played without any real angst towards it. Until 2010, they were on the low end of the rival scale, at least in Cardinals fans eyes. That might sound smug but it's true.

As long as the Cards try to nip at the heels of the contending NL Central champs there will be a strong rivalry. Of course, without a healthy Carpenter and possibly Garcia, maybe the Cardinals and the Cubs can reignite their rivalry in the basement.
    Where we gonna go?

Too arrogant to recognize a rivalry I guess? Who could possibly be at the level of the team representing the greatest baseball city in the world, after all. There is enjoyment in snickering at the lowly Cubs, though, right?

Again.. we didn't have those two pitchers last year and they were one game away from the World Series. I don't think they will have a problem being competitive this year.

Same rotation, except for their Cy Young candidate Kyle Lohse.

Not, it's not arrogance. There was never hate there, at least from Cardinals fans perspectives for the Reds to be a heated rival. For most of this past decade or so the Reds were never really in contention for a division title. As Seluki explained, the Astros were more of a rival as of late than the Reds.

Maybe I'm not explaining myself here properly. From a Reds fans perspective, the Cardinals may have been a heated rival for years. From a Cards fan perspective, the Reds were never a heated rival until they started to compete for division titles.

I hated Larussa and Carpenter, but don't hate the Cardinals as a whole. With both of those whiners out of St Louis, my disdain has 100% shifted towards the Pirates. I hope Chapman plunks everyone in that lineup with a vengeance.

I would like to hate Yadier Molina. I really would. The problem I have is that he is just a fantastic player.

I'll find someone to hate, I just need a little more time.

Historical rivalries are overrated. Players change and teams drop in and out of relevance. Call it a big rivalry if you want, but I don't think Molina's getting all fired up about heading to Wrigley.

It's not out of the question that the Cards resign Lohse now that this news hit. Plus I expect Wainwright to be better, two years removed from injury and I expect both Kelly and Lynn to be better in their second year in the majors.
