    Last offseason's targets for LF

Players mentioned last offseason that the Reds should consider signing for LF from Lance's blog:

    The Ludwick Factor
I went back and looked at the names we kicked around during the offseason as potential free agent LF signings:

    Rick Ankiel:
    1-year deal, $1.25M, Washington
    .228-.282-.411-.694, 5 HR, 15 RBI in 158 AB
    Released by Nationals last week.

    Johnny Damon
    1-year deal, $1.25M, Cleveland
    .222-.281-.329-.610, 4 HR, 19 RBI in 207 AB

    Cody Ross
    1-year deal, $3M, Boston
    .265-.337-.523-.859, 16 HR, 51 RBI in 264 AB

    Kosuke Fukodome
    1-year deal, $1M, White Sox
    .171-.294-.195-.489, 0 HR, 4 RBI in 41 AB
Released by White Sox, signed to minor league deal by Yankees

    Josh Willingham
    3-year deal, $21M
    .269-.381-.560-.941, 27 hr, 79 RBI in 361 AB

    Ryan Ludwick
    1-year deal w/option, $2M '12, $5M '13 w/ $500K team option
    .261-.332-.464-.796, 19 HR, 56 RBI in 265 AB

Willingham alot more expensive but better numbers. Ross is okay. Everyone else pretty much bombed.

For the money, Ludwick was the right choice.

If you're going to include Willingham on there, I think you have to include Beltran (my first choice). Still though, point stands- it's hard to imagine getting someone better than Ludwick has been, especially given the money.

Yeah I wanted Beltran too, but Ludwick has been the best value for sure.

Nice idea for a thread to follow up like this.

I see Ludwick's current stats at:
    .264/.333/.555/.888 in 265 at bats

I think Beltran was a lot of people's first choice. What I find interesting with Ludwick if you look at his June and July his OPS is close to 1.000. Beltran on the other hand started off the season red hot but has slowed since the All Star break.

What does it all mean? Ludwick at $2M with a $5M option is a whole heck of a lot better than Carlos Beltran 2 years $26M.

I don't think anyone would dispute this.

Yeah if given a choice between Ludwick for $2.5 million and Beltran for $13 million with hindsight of what they'd do this year, give me Ludwick and the saved $10.5 mil in salary.

    Ludwick .264-19-56 .333/.555/.888
    Beltran .285-24-75 .359/.532/.891

Beltran has Ludwick beat in the counting stats mainly because Ludwick was splitting time early with Heisey. But the rate stats are only slightly to Beltran's favor.

All things being equal, I'd still take Beltran. But salary is not equal and I'd take the small bump for nearly $11 million in savings.

I think the edge with Beltran is that he has been far more consistent and has a better track record than Ludwick in their respective careers. Yes, Ludwick is a great value this year and has been on a nice run. However, the kind of player Ludwick is he could easily have a horrible August and September.

That's all true, but you also have Beltran's injury history to consider. And the fact that him and Ludwick are trending in opposite directions.

And maybe the Cards could have used that $10M in savings to bolster that bullpen.

Beltran was never a real option for the Reds, I think.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

They had the money to bolster the bullpen regardless of signing Beltran or not. They thought they were fine with what they had.

I think Ludwick is a much better value going forward. I'm willing to take the risk that Petco had a drastic effect and created an aberration on his hitting stroke and he's now back to normal. The Reds have 2 more months to evaluate him. If he finishes anything near what he's done in July for August and September I think its a no brainer they try to keep him.
