Razor - I'm not sure you can rely on those swing speed monitors. I've never seen you swing a club in person, but Charlie Beljan currently leads the tour with an average swing speed of 124.3, and has the fastest swing of the year at 130.1.

I know I looked up swing speeds when I got home that night. I watched someone else in one and it had him at 115-120, so they must just be on the high side for whatever reason. I'm not as concerned with my actual speed any more as I think it's at least fast enough to have moved from S flex to X flex.

These numbers are your ball speed coming off the club face, not your actual swing speed. Unless this monitor is completely out of whack. On a perfect strike, your ball speed will be 1.5 times your swing speed (smash factor is the name for this). So, when your at 152 and 153, your swing speed is about 100 or 101. Not bad at all. PGA Tour average is in the 112-113 range with an average ball speed around 165.

I'm very new at learning about different types of shafts. I've been told so many different things. I took a lesson with an old pro because it was cheap and his suggestion was to change my swing with the driver so it wasn't steep and try a flat swing. I really don't want to do that but I've considered it.
The shaft you're using, the Ahina, is pretty stiff. Ironically, I had the exact same club as you last year. The shaft wasn't stiff enough for me so I switched to a Motore Speeder VC7.2 (fyi, my swing speed is 113-115 with ball speed 170 on my best strikes). It's definitely stiffer, but on the bad side it's a lot more expensive than the stock Titleist shaft.

There is a chance your shaft isn't the best one for you, but after watching your swing again on Youtube, it's not the shaft that's causing your ball to spin too much. Like the old pro said, you're swinging way to steeply into the ball with the driver which greatly enhances the spin on the ball. I'm guessing your spin is off the charts off, like 4000 rpm. If you can get it down to the 2500 range, you'll hit the ball so much further.

That speed makes way more sense, even though I did specifically ask the Golfsmith guy if it was ball speed or swing speed. He probably read it wrong.

So flatter. My biggest reservation for flattening my swing is a completely stupid reason. When I think flatter swing with the driver I think of Miguel Angel Jimenez. He's about the only pro I've ever watched and said "I hate his swing". Now obviously he's not just a pro but a very good pro and I'd be ecstatic to ever hit the ball the way he did but for some reason I always hated his swing.

Thats a really dumb thing to be stubborn about and I've now had two pros tell me to flatten my swing off the tee, so I'll go ahead and listen. Lol

    Thanks

Has anyone played Rising Star Casino's course? I'm playing it tomorrow before heading on to the Reds game.

Believe or not, I live in FL and played my first round of the year yesterday. I went from playing pretty well to losing it really quickly the end of last summer. Not sure what happened, but wanted to take a small break. Then had an elbow injury and then life happened and I found myself not playing. I've only been to the range twice even.

So I was surprised when I hit the ball really well. I've been swinging inside the last couple of weeks and I've lost a substantial amount of weight since I played last. That made things so much easier. I'm much more flexible and I hit 2 of the longest drives I've ever hit. Scored just ok having 4 3-putts on ridiculously slow greens.

Hopefully I'm going to start playing again as I get free golf at a couple of nice courses.

^I know that when I played a lot 5-6 years ago and was pretty good I practiced slow motion swings for 30-40 mins every night and I think that helped me more than anything. I've started to get back into doing that but somehow that 30-40 mins is harder to find with 3 boys running around.

Anyway if we can talk about me some more. JK, I actually just want to be the next in a line of people to say how great Redhook's instruction is even from 1000 miles away. I've practiced flattening my driver swing at the range and then slow motion in the garage. I played 9 today and I hit consistently longer than I've ever hit. 2 drives I swore someone was out in front of us and snuck out and kicked my ball 25 yards down the fairway.

Anyone have any suggestions on Range Finders? I have resisted in the past but since they are pretty much legal today I figure why not.

I took a liner off the shoulder last weekend from a playing partner who bladed one out of the sand trap. The moment before the ball left his club, the other member of our group who was standing next to me said "Hey, we seem to be giving Nick a lot of credit by standing where we are". After we scrambled (unsuccessfully on my part) to avoid the sand screamer, we literally rolled on the ground laughing for quite some time. The guy who hit me was quite relieved that I as laughing insted of pissed. I knew it was my own fault (by the same philosophy that I blame anyone who puts their house in the way of one of my tee shots for their broken window).

No suggestion on Range Finders, but I have used the Golf Logix app and find it decent for yardages. You sometimes have to wait for it to settle, but its not bad. Also it is fairly nice to keep score in and you can have it count round stats such as chips. Its not enough of a wait to make you play longer. I played 36 holes today in about 5 hours total. I was just proud of that for some stupid reason. Now Charlie Reimer can stop flooding the Golf Channel with slow play ads please. Oh, and its free to try out I think. I also own no stock in the company that makes it .

I've used that one. It's pretty good but I'd suggest trying the PGA Tour Caddie app. It loads faster and the hole previews are great. It gives you a fly by view similar to what you get on TV.

Headed to Turning Stone resort in New York in 2 weeks. Have 5 rounds scheduled for the 3 days. With the casino being on the property I don't see my group bring able to get that 5th round in on Sunday ; )

Going to be fun though. Heard they keep all their courses in immaculate shape since the casino makes all their profits.

I am a lifetime duffer (I struggle to shoot under 100 on a decent course) who recently got bitten by the bug. While on vacation I got to play two beautiful courses and then played a great round (for me) when I got back home. These three rounds are more than I played all of last year, and now I want to go to the course so bad I can taste it, but instead I am shackled to my desk.
What if this is as good as it gets?

I am going tomorrow. Last time out I shot a 68. I didn't have time to play the last 9. I am left handed but am forcing myself to play right handed because I was really bad left handed, I also bat right handed. Played for the first time in 10 years last week. I think I am still really bad but it is almost a certainty that I will improve, you can't get much worse.
