Good list. I'd have to add the appearance of AIDS in place of four or five.

Others might be the recent Tsunami, 2000 Election, failed Russian coup, Rwanda, the Balkans and German Reunification.

Re: Top 5 News Stories of the Last 25 Years

1. 9/11/01
2. The fall of the Berlin Wall, 1989
3. The collapse of the Soviet Union, 1991
Those three news stories made for riveting TV viewing, as did both Iraqi wars and the Challenger tragedy. Certainly the Oklahoma City bombing was important. Several U.S. presidential elections could be considered, including Reagan's election in 1980 and the controversy over the 2000 election. There is the aborted move towards democracy in China in the late 1980s and Russia's more recent slip back into a more autocratic system. Then there are the stories that don't make riveting video but may be more important, for good or ill, such as the economic growth enjoyed by America for most of the last 25 years and the growth of AIDS throughout the world. Finally the Reds winning the World Series in 1990 deserves mention.

Re: Top 5 News Stories of the Last 25 Years

The shooting down of KAL 007 made for an intense time. Then there was the rash of bombings from Lockerbie and Beirut to Rome and Berlin that came to an abrupt end when Reagan bombed Tripoli. Pathfinder explored a world and captivated another. Apartied ended. The internet connected the world and destroyed fortunes. A president was impeached. The Kursk sank. The newly ubiquitous cell phone saved either the White House or the Capitol from terrorist attack. Mad cow disease threatened the world's food supply. Oh, and Nicolas Cage and Keanu Reeves continued to find acting jobs.
