6 U.S. Dead In Iraq Convoy Attack

A suicide car bomber slammed into a U.S. military convoy in Fallujah, killing five U.S. Marines and a sailor, CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin reports. Martin said that several female Marines were among those killed.

The women Marines were members of a supply unit being driven into Fallujah to assist in searching local women for hidden weapons. The armored military vehicle the Marines were riding in was struck by the bomber.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said another 13 Marines were wounded in the Thursday night attack.

The car bomber targeted troops assigned to the II Marine Expeditionary Force, an earlier military statement said. Fallujah, the Anbar province town 40 miles west of Baghdad, was the scene of a large-scale campaign in November by U.S. troops to rout militants.

At least 1,730 members of the U.S. military have died since the war began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

The terrorist group al Qaeda in Iraq, headed by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying six "crusaders" were killed and two Humvees were destroyed. The claim was posted on an Internet site, but its authenticity could not be verified.

U.S. forces in Fallujah arrested Associated Press Television News cameraman Amer Ali who went to the scene at midday Friday, and his video showed black scorch marks along a road and scattered chunks of metal. Video he shot Thursday showed thick plumes of black smoke rising from the blast.

I'm glad the insurgency is in its death throes, otherwise this could have been much worse...

I wonder, how much more of this will we take? How many dead Americans will it take before people rise up and declare 'enough' to this idiocy?

Hard to believe that there are humans who train others to kill themselves like this. Hard to believe that there are humans willing to accept lies and blow themselves up.

Desperation. Desperate people in a hopeless situation do things like this. That's why I believe it's critical that we focus all of our efforts in this area in building infrastructure, supporting education, capital investment, etc. If the U.S. truly wants to "win" the war on terror, it must do so by cutting it off at it sbase--which would mean depriving the terrorist recruiters of able-bodied young men willing to take on such assignments. When people have a comfortable life, they don't feel the need to resort to such tactics.
