Worst Song of the 80's....
This may surprise you but when I was thinking of the worst song of the 70's this song came immediately too my mind...the lyrics are awful....And eventhough sung in a suductive whisper, the song is a soul cleansing confessional meant to encourage women to "settle down" and "Find themselves"...the musicianship is suspect and the production value is HORRIBLE!!!!!
What little gem contains such well rounded disapointment? I've Never Been To Me by Charlene...yes, Charlene!!! This song was released in 1982 and actually got a lot of spins regionally...but as I said, no other song tempts me to END IT ALL like this song because it is so terrible! Read the lyrics and become convinced of the negative power of this song Hey lady, you lady cursing at your life you're a discontented mother and a regimented wife I have no doubt you dream about the things you never do but I wish someone had talked to me like I wanna talk to you Oh, I've been to Georgia and California and anywhere I could run Took the hand of a preacher man and we made love in the sun But I ran out of places and friendly faces Because I had to be free I've been to paradise but I've never been to me... Please lady please lady don't just walk away Cause I have this need to tell you why I'm all alone today I can see so much of me still living in your eyes won't you share a part of a weary heart that has lived a million lives Oh, I've been to Nice and the isle of Greece when I sipped champagne on a yacht I moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo and showed them what I've got I've been undressed by kings and I've seen some things that a woman ain't s'pose to see I've been to paradise but I've never been to me... Hey, you know what paradise is? It's a lie a fantasy we created about people and places as we like them to be but you know what truth is? it's that little baby you're holding and it's that man you fought with this morning the same one you are gonna make love to tonight that's truth that's love sometimes I've been to crying for unborn children that might have made me complete but I, I took the sweet life I never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet I spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that costs too much to be free hey lady I've been to paradise but I've never been to me... I've been to paradise but I've never been to me...

Re: Worst Song of the 80's....
My wife just pointed out another song that brings good taste to a stop...A song by the redneck...I mean redheaded queen of country music...Reba.
This song essentially says...hey, I know you're going to New England to do the deed with some skank up that way...but ya know, when they get tired of you...I'll still be here...Now that is love. Whoever's In New England You spend an awful lot of time in Massachusetts Seems Like every other week you've got a meeting waiting there Business must be booming or could something else Be moving in the air up there You say that its important for our future An executive on his way up has got to play the part Each time duty calls you got to give it all You've got with all your heart When whoever's in New England is through with you And Boston finds better things to do You know its not too late 'cause you'll always have a place to come back to When whoever's in New Englands through with you I hear the winter time up north can last forever Ive been told its beautiful to see this time of year They say the snow can blind you till the world you left behind Just disappears I hear I packed your bags and left them in the hallway But before you leave again theres just one thing you outta know When the icy winds blow through you remember that its me Who feels the cold most of all When whoever's in New England is through with you And Boston finds better things to do You know its not too late 'cause you'll always have a place to come back to When whoever's in New Englands through with you

Here's one radio station's polls:
Code:
The Hall Of Shame The big winner from the 50's, with 60 votes, was: Patti Page (the Singing Rage)'s Doggie In The Window. Here are the full results for the 50's contest! The Maxi Hit from the 60's, with 154 votes, was: Shirley Ellis's The Name Game. (Chuck, Chuck, bo-Buck...) Here are the full results for the 60's contest! #1 with a bullet from the early 70's (1970-1973), with 164 votes, was: Wayne Newton's Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast. Here are the full results for the Early 70's contest! The winner for 1974 - a very special year - was: Terry Jacks' Seasons In The Sun, with an astounding 1011 votes. Here are the full results for the 1974 contest! The aural ipecac of the late 70s was: Debby Boone's You Light Up My Life with 830 votes - actually a plurality in a field of mediocrity. Here are the full results for the late 70s contest! The pinnacle of 80s schlock-rock was : Toto's Rosanna with an astounding 4127 votes! Followed closely by Maniac (4104 votes) and Ride Like the Wind (4102 votes). [note to obsessive voters: GET A LIFE, NOW!] Here are the full results for the 80s contest! The 90s Generation Brand X winner was: Alanis Morrisette's You Oughta Know with 1452 votes! Pretty darn close to the miserable Let her Cry from Hootie and the Blowfishes with 1441 votes! Here are the full results for the 90s contest! http://www.wfmu.org/WSC/wsc.80r.html BTW My vote is for "The Girl is Mine" Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney

We Built This City.
Hands down, the worst. Even the alums of "Starship" would admit it.

Re: Worst Song of the 80's....
After the first post, I'm not sure there's reason to mention any other songs. Nothing could top that one.
However, there was a man and woman team who did remakes of "Free Bird" and a Frampton song ("Baby I love Your Way? I'm not sure) who should have been jailed for murder on the spot. I have put their names out of my head, but some echo of the awfulness of the recording remains. |
