Don't stand on chairs

I was fixing the hole in my ceiling yesterday and needed to reach a bit higher to get a couple screws in, so I decided to use a kitchen chair. Big mistake! Here I am, reaching up with the cordless drill in one hand and a screw in the other when the leg on the chair just broke. These are sturdy looking chairs, but the darn thing just snapped. I was caught somewhat unawares and went flying into the wall. I knew something was wrong when I tried to get up and didn't have enough strength in my left arm.

So my wife got home and drove me up to Mercy Fairfield and by that time the pain was getting pretty intense. The x-ray was not pleasant, twisting my arm in all directions to get the right shot. Well, it turns out that I have two breaks, one in the elbow and one in the wrist. I'm splinted up and I'm going to get a cast Monday. If you don't see many posts from me for a while, only having one hand might have an effect on my typing ability. Now if these pain killers could work a bit better...

So next time you need to reach something, think twice before you use a kitchen chair. At least it was my left arm. I'd hate to have to change my screen name for the next six weeks.

Wow, sorry to hear that. I cringe when hearing about broken bones - been there, done that.

Hang in there.

And buy a step ladder!!

First broken bone. I didn't know it hurt that much. I almost passed out during x-rays. Good excuse to watch football all day. My wife won't let me do anything.

Yes, we learned in our torts class that these injuries are quite common, and sometimes result in death due to impalement.

Hope your recovery goes well.

Ow!

I've sprained a few things and broken some digits, but never a joint. Much less two!

You'll be in my thoughts, ORH.

I'm still in the no-broken-bones club, but I sympathize with your pain.

My wife and kids love to stand on chairs to reach things. I'll be using your story to bolster my argument that chairs shouldn't be trusted.

Glad you don't have to change your screen name, but you should expect to get in some extra glove work after the cast comes off, as we'll still be expecting you to field your position next season.

Re: Don't stand on chairs

Thanks all. That glove work will have to wait until around Christmas when I get the cast off. I'm going to head to Home Depot for a good sturdy stepping stool.

I feel ya ORH.

A couple of years ago - I broke my tailbone snowboarding. Probably the most painful experience I've ever had.

Stay out of trouble and heal up that bad wing.

You're in my prayers ORH.

Chairs are E-V-I-L.

I usually use the wife's end tables, which her Dad (a retired carpenter) made for us. Solid oak baby!

That's weird, typing with one hand has never been a problem for me.

Hmm...the American way, just sue someone.

I'm going to the orthopedic doctor today. I'm on some prescription pain killer, but all it does is make me sleepy. I tried to watch a football game yesterday, but slept through most of it.
