Deerfield "Light" house pulls the plug

By Jessica Brown
Enquirer staff writer

DEERFIELD TWP. – Just two days after his computerized Christmas light display gained national media attention, Carson Williams had to shut it down last night because of traffic problems.

So many cars have been coming to his house to see the display it has become a safety concern, he said. Last night a car accident occurred in the midst of the traffic jam caused by the display and authorities were unable to get to the scene, he said.

“I’ve compromised the safety of the people who live in our neighborhood,” he said. “So we’ve shut the show down indefinitely.”

The light show featured several Christmas songs, including one from the Trans-Syberian Orchestra. He synchronized the 25,000 lights on his home to flash to the music, which played on an FM radio frequency so passers by could tune in.

Williams posted his 2004 display online and it became so popular it earned his family an appearance Monday on “The Today Show.”

This house is about a mile or so from us. We went to see it last year and thought it was really cool. IIRC, he had a web site that talked about the technology that he used.

When it was just word-of-mouth, there was hardly any traffic, maybe one or two cars parked in front. My son went to take his girlfriend to see it a couple nights ago and the whole neighborhood was jammed up.

With all that creativity, I don't see why he can't hook up with the local zoo, mall or community to set one of those up where more people can access it. It seems a shame to shut down something like that, but I can't imagine how annoyed I would be with all the traffic if someone did it on my street.
