Teen Travels to Iraq Without Telling His Parents

What an incredibly stupid thing to do. He probably just earned a scholarship to journalism school, though.

Really stupid! But the kids has gonads. I think he will make a fine journalist in a few years.

I agree RBA, but this kid has some brass ones. That's what I was amazed about.

If his parents are like mine, it's a good thing he snuck off to Iraq and not to his girlfriend's house.

If he were my kid I'd ground him and take away his video games for a month.

Re: Teen Travels to Iraq Without Telling His Parents

Gesh, the best I could ever do was sneak off to Oklahoma for a basketball game when I was in college in Illinois.

My parents said "Don't you drive your car to Oklahoma!!"

So I had my friends drive - I just rode along.

Re: Teen Travels to Iraq Without Telling His Parents

He seems to have had access to a whole bunch of money to have pulled this off, too. I just can't imagine giving a high school kid unbridled access to the over $1000 that he spent getting to Baghdad. Since he had threatened to make the trip, it seems to me like his parents could have prevented it from happening by hiding his passport.

I'm just having trouble working up any sympathy for the parents in this case.

If it were my kid, he'd be on Mapquest looking for the directions to drive to Baghdad!

Doesn't it just not add up? Something smells to me. You don't suppose his parents were in on it? Book/Movie Deal? And how does an airline let a minor on an flight (an international flight to the middle east) without parental consent?

You're probably right. Whatever happens, I'm sure we haven't heard the last of this.

The fact that dad used connections and set him up with an escorted tour, since he was already there, really lends credence to what you suggest. The story he will have to tell will be much more salable than it would have been if he'd been whisked home right after showing up at the Associated Press office.
